Baby’s Laugh Makes Dealing With Rejection Easier

Posted by Tiffany in Baby & Kids on February 28, 2011 at 2:40 pm

What’s the best way to deal with a rejection letter? Crumple it up and throw it in the trash? No, that’s too pedestrian. What you really need to do is tear it into tiny pieces all while making your baby laugh hysterically.

McArthur says he’s finishing up his doctorate at SLU and applying for professor jobs.  When he received yet another rejection letter he ripped it in half and baby Micah started laughing uncontrollably, so he started ripping credit card statements and the sweet sounds of laughter continued.

Even Babies Know That Size Matters

Posted by Alex in Baby & Kids, Psychology on January 28, 2011 at 10:57 pm

Regardless of what those hippie parents try to tell you, size matters and even babies know it. According to this intriguing study, psychologists found that infants less than one year old understand social dominance and how size factors into it:

"Traditional kings and chieftains sit on large, elevated thrones and wear elaborate crowns or robes that make them look bigger than they really are, and subordinates often bow or kneel to show respect to superior humans and gods," says Thomsen, a research fellow in Harvard’s Department of Psychology and assistant professor of psychology at the University of Copenhagen. "Many animals, like birds and cats, will puff themselves up to look physically larger to an adversary, and prostrate themselves to demonstrate submission, like dogs do. Our work suggests that even with limited socialization, preverbal human infants may understand such displays."

20 Awful Firsts With Your New Baby

Posted by Miss Cellania in Baby & Kids on November 8, 2010 at 8:03 am

Parents experience unbelievable joy at many of their baby’s accomplishments -the first smile, the first step, the first words. There are also many not-so-joyful firsts, as you’ll see in this list at NeatoBambino.

The first time they spit up on a friend who doesn’t have children. I’m convinced this is why some of my friends are still childless.  Really, I am so sorry.

The first time your newborn son pees in your face. Yes, it really does happen.  I finally got wise and started covering him up with a wash cloth while changing his diaper.

The first time they have massive diaper failure. I call these poo-splosions.  They typically occur when you are in a hurry, you have placed them in your favorite little outfit, or have somehow forgotten a change of clothes.

The First time they put something really gross in their mouth. Babies are like ninjas. They have stealth reflexes. They can grab and lick the bottom of a shoe faster than you can scream “NO!”

Experienced parents will laugh; others may run screaming after reading this list. You are invited to add your experiences in the comments. Link

Toddler Falls Six Floors Unhurt

Posted by Miss Cellania in Baby & Kids on November 3, 2010 at 7:29 am

An 18-month-old boy in Paris fell out of a sixth-story apartment window Monday afternoon. He bounced off a canopy over a ground-floor cafe and into the arms of a doctor who was passing by!

The man who caught the boy was walking by with his wife and son, who spotted the boy falling.

Another witness told Le Figaro that the doctor positioned himself by the awning and caught the boy in his arms after he bounced off it.

The witness, Francois, said the boy cried a bit at first but quickly calmed down.

The doctor, identified as Philippe Benseniot by France Info, said it was pure luck.

“I was there at the right time,” he told France Info.

The child was taken to a hospital but was found to be uninjured. Link -via Fortean Times

Got a Baby? Got a Window?

Posted by Minnesotastan in Baby & Kids, Health on October 26, 2010 at 5:22 pm

This “baby cage” was marketed for families living in tenements without easy access to outdoor spaces.

Suspended from the side of the building, the baby would have access to fresh air and sunlight through the cage’s wire frame, and still have sufficient room to play with toys, according to a patent filed in 1922 by an Emma Read of Spokane, WA. The patent also notes that the cage could double as a place to sleep, with removable curtains working to prevent a draft.

There is an additional photo and further explanation at the Atlantic link.

Man Rescued Baby from Dumpster, Found Out He’s Actually the Father!

Posted by Alex in Baby & Kids on October 25, 2010 at 12:33 am

Either this is the strangest coincidence ever, or there’s more to the story. In a nutshell (or dumpster bin):

1. Man was walking when someone told him that there’s a newborn crying in the dumpster.

2. Man rescued baby.

3. Man found out later that HE was the father of said baby (he didn’t know his girlfriend was pregnant)

Is this a made for Lifetime story? You betcha:

"A girl said, ‘I think I hear a baby in the Dumpster.’ With
no knowledge at the time that this is my kid whatsoever, I went running over there, stood beside the Dumpster, heard the baby cry," he said.

"I jumped in and removed the stuff. I personally opened the bag and uncovered all the stuff off," he said.

"My first sight of my baby was covered in garbage."

BYOB Party for Breastfeeding Moms

Posted by Alex in Baby & Kids on July 26, 2010 at 12:51 am

When should a man steer clear of a BYOB party with lots of babes? When BYOB stands for "Bring Your Own Boobz" – yes, a home party for breastfeeding moms:

The parties are strictly BYOB. But the place will be littered with babes, without any alcohol in sight.

That’s because these are BYOBoobz parties — yes, as in mammary glands. And the home parties are designed to give support, guidance and a few free goodies to new breast-feeding moms, as part of a mission to help them overcome the "booby traps" associated with nursing.

The Masked Baby of China

Posted by Alex in Baby & Kids, Health, Pictures on July 7, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Photo: Changsha Information Network

Kang Kang is your otherwise normal toddler – healthy, inquisitive, and smart – except for one striking feature: he was born with a rare case of facial cleft that made him look like he’s wearing a mask:

"My family didn’t allow me to see my son at the beginning, and I pleaded with my husband to let me have a look. Before they passed me the baby, they told me ‘don’t be sad, don’t be sad’, but when I saw my son, I collapsed," said a crying Yi. [...]

Professor Wang Duquan of 163 Hospital said there are many possible reasons, like disease infection during embryo development, taking medications during pregnancy, and so on.

Professor Wang said it’s the first such case he ever met. "It’s different from a cleft lip or cleft palate; it’s a facial cleft. Not only his face muscles are cleft, but the inside bones are cleft."

Another New Neatoramanaut!

Posted by Miss Cellania in Baby & Kids on June 3, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I just found out about another blessed event that occurred on Monday of this week. Neatorama author John Farrier (who runs NeatoGeek) and his wife welcomed baby Sophia! Then for some reason, he got busy and didn’t tell us. John referred to her as “my newest little Ferengi” (although she is much prettier than any Ferengi could hope to be). Congratulations to mom, dad, and the whole family!
