An unnamed man went to get some cash from a Caja Madrid bank machine in Llodio, Alava, Spain and saw his cash coming from the slot -plus a snake! Even though the snake lunged toward his hand, he grabbed his money, then summoned the police. A bank manager activated the cash release that had trapped the snake, which was then boxed and taken to an animal shelter. Link -via Arbroath

This rudimentary machine, circa 1918, is the grandparent of today’s ATMs. These machines, made by “Bankers Automatic Receiving Teller Co.”, resembled bank buildings and were in use until the 1930s. Some were placed in schools to teach children the value of saving. They accepted both coins and paper money and recorded transactions in the customer’s pass book.
Artists Allora and Calzadilla made this unusual ATM in Venice. It’s built into a pipe organ that plays a unique tune for each customer:
But this is no run-of-the-mill A.T.M. The brainchild of the artist duo Allora & Calzadilla, it is a pipe organ with an A.T.M. embedded in its belly that is computer-programmed to play a tune when a person puts in their pin number. Even when returning customers use it, no two tunes are alike.

A new ATM in a luxurious hotel in Abu Dubai dispenses little gold bars and coins to customers. It’s updated every ten minutes to stay current with prices on the world gold market:
The exterior of the machine is coated with a thin layer of gold and offers customers 320 items to choose from, ranging from gold bars that can weigh up to 10 grams, to customised gold coins.
Gold rates are constantly updated inside the shiny machine in the hotel’s lobby, courtesy of a built-in computer connected to a dealer which sells gold online
Bank Machine, an ATM operator in Britain, now has five cash machines in London that offer users the opportunity to conduct their business in the cockney dialect. It’s a promotional gimmick designed to amuse customers:
“Readin’ your bladder of lard”, read the message on the screen. It asked for his “Huckleberry Finn”. Then more bewildering questions: did he wanted to see his balance on the Charlie Sheen? Did he wish to change his Huckleberry Finn or did he simply require sausage and mash, with or without a receipt?
At the recent DefCon hackers’ convention in Las Vegas, a fake ATM deceived many hackers in attendance:
An organizer for the conference said security authorities seized the device. It’s not known how long the ATM was in the hotel or whether it was placed there by a DefCon attendee to catch his fellow hackers or simply by an outside criminal group trying to target conference attendees.
Witnesses say the kiosk was well-placed to avoid surveillance cameras….
Markus said it was clear to him the ATM was fake when he looked at the smoked glass on the front of the machine and noticed something funny about it. When he beamed a flashlight through the glass, instead of seeing a camera behind it, he saw the PC that was set up to siphon card data.
The ATM had been placed right outside the hotel’s security office.

South Africa is apparently one really dangerous place. Case in point: ATMs there are weaponized – yep, weaponized – with pepper spray. What could go wrong? Apparently, this:
The technology uses cameras to detect people tampering with the card slots. Another machine then ejects pepper spray to stun the culprit while police response teams race to the scene.
But the mechanism backfired in one incident last week when pepper spray was inadvertently inhaled by three technicians who required treatment from paramedics.
Patrick Wadula, spokesman for the Absa bank, which is piloting the scheme, told the Mail & Guardian Online: "During a routine maintenance check at an Absa ATM in Fish Hoek, the pepper spray device was accidentally activated.
