WIMM Wearable Android Module

Posted by Nan Koenig in Gadgets, Hacks & Mods, Living on August 15, 2011 at 2:42 am

Wristwatches are waning as folks replace their time pieces with their smart phones. Wearing a phone is not exactly fashionable, but wearing a one-inch module from WIMM that incorporates an Android platform could be. Keeping track of your appointments, calls, and other data all from a module that fits on your wrist does have its appeal. It’s full color and is touch capable!

Posted by Shane McGlaun in Animals & Pets, Gaming on May 20, 2011 at 11:20 am

Cats are cool and all, but I have yet to see a cat that I would want playing my iPad. If your cat is the pampered sort that has everything, it may be time to get your feline its own iPad or Android tablet. Friskies has a line of games for the tablets just for cats. You can see the cats in all their gaming glory in the video above. link

Japanese Fembot Has Incredibly Realistic Facial Expressions

Posted by John Farrier in Robot, Science & Tech on October 27, 2010 at 11:05 am

(Video Link)

Actroid-F looks almost human. Not just in the way its face is sculpted, but the way that it moves. Guinness World Records lists it as the first true android. In the above video, the robot mimics the expressions of its operator. The people behind the project suggest that it could be placed in hospitals as an observer.

Roomba Robot Tour Guide

Posted by marcmywords in Video Clips on June 11, 2010 at 8:04 pm

[YouTube - Link]

There’s a German robot named Robotinho that cruises around on 4 linked Roombas, operating as a tour guide at the Deutsches Museum Bonn. I would be terrified to follow it around from exhibit to exhibit, as its awkward facial muscles twitched into unnatural expressions and it spewed out museum facts. The robot apocalypse is upon us, and it’s riding on Roombas.

Who’s The Best Robot/Android Ever?

Posted by Alex in Film on January 29, 2010 at 1:32 pm

What better way to start off a geek fight than to ask who is the greatest movie or TV robot/android? Curtis Silver of Geek Dad did just that by comparing Data from Star Trek, to just about every other android.

For example, just to add fuel to the raging Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate:

Data vs. C3PO

C3PO can understand and translate around six million different forms of communication. Mind you, he was designed and built by a young boy. While the Midi-chlorians might have been high in young Skywalker’s bloodstream, they didn’t help him build a droid with much of a backbone. Meanwhile, in a galaxy far far away Dr. Soong was busy creating a sentient android of his own with not only a backbone, but a badass positronic brain. It’s never made clear how many languages Data can speak, but one has to assume the number is just as high as C3PO. Advantage: Data

What do you think? Who’s the best robot/android that ever lived (well, in sci-fi anyhow)?

Top Ten A.I. Characters (redux)

Posted by Johnny Cat in Film on October 18, 2009 at 11:36 pm

Still from Blade Runner; Warner Bros. 1982

A long time ago they were called robots.  That rather pedestrian term evolved into android, droid, cyborg, and artificial intelligence, among others.  Plenty of movies have featured them in one fashion or another, and Unreality’s Madison cobbled together the ten best, with Blade Runner’s Roy Batty coming in at number 5.

Roy Batty, quite simply, is a bad, bad dude.  As leader of the Nexus-6 replicants, Batty is a combat model used for military battles, and so his speed, strength, and combat skills are far beyond those of a human being.  He also has a genius level intellect, which he employs to torment Deckard.  He eventually shows empathy for Deckard, though, and Batty himself appears to be more human than the humans who sought out to have him destroyed.

Find out which cinematic circuit board made the top of the list.

Update 10/18/09 by Alex – delinked. The malware is in Unreality Mag’s ad server. There’s a rogue ad rotating amongst regular ads. Pls keep this delinked and do not remove/repost. Thanks!

Evolution of Technology is a jaw-droppingly creative ad on the "evolution" of steampunk robotic dinosaurs to modern androids. It’s developed by Scholz&Friends Group for the German electric store Saturn.
