Cats vs. Dogs

Cats and dogs each have their good points and not-so-good points. Many of us like both, but if you could only have one pet, would it be a cat or a dog? Or would it be another kind of pet altogether?

Dogs. Lock your kids, your wife, your cat, your ferret, and your dog in the truck and see who's happy to see you when you open it back up 2 hours later.

It all comes down to weather you prefer scheduling time each day to great little land mines in the back yard or if you comfortable with a box of shit in your living room.

LOL @ HimAgain. I like dogs because they are ALWAYS happen to see you. I don't want to take care of an animal that doesn't appreciate me and want to give me attention when I call to them!

This article is visibly biased. The most expensive cat breed, the Bengal rarely goes over 3000$. The average lifespan of a cat is actually more around 14-16. The studies mentioned there do not exist (google).

Sure dogs are lovely, but cats can really teach you a thing or two about life and relationships...
Emotionally speaking, the relationship with a dog is a parent-child one, the relationship with a cat, instead, is a more adult-adult one. Whoever lives with a cat knows what I'm talking about.
The fact that cats don't seem to appreciate people is a clichè that is absolutely untrue.

My cat absolutely does appreciate me... in fact she is jealous of my wife.

Dogs are more useful to society. Think of all the service dogs for the blind, drug sniffing dogs, police dogs etc...
It doesn't necessarily make them better, but it's certainly a point in their favour.
If anyone wishes to bring up that more people are seriously injured by dogs, that's generally the owner's fault in the way they raised them. It would appear both cats and dogs are better than some humans in that respect.

I like both, but we have too many cats to get a dog on the side. I have one cat that likes to go for walkies & 2 cats that like corn, cauliflour, & melon.

I like both, however, Cats ARE SMARTER than Dogs. If you let a dog into a house with a litterbox, he will run to it, thinking it is a smogasboard. Have you ever seen a Cat eat Dog poop?

  • offtopic
    May 15th, 2010 at 7:54 am

    @SecretStorm

Except that's not about intelligence, it's an evolutionary trait of dogs originally developed to hide the distinctive smell of puppy-poo from predators.

Dogs don't have to lick themselves clean and make hairballs, that doesn't make them smarter than cats.

But dogs can be trained to sniff out cancer, so I say they win.

I think it's a silly debate, because if you like animals in general, you will become attached to a dog or cat, if it's living in your home for a few months, whether you've ever owned one or the other before. I know so many people who say they never liked/owned one or the other until they got one, and then grew to love it. With occasional exceptions, cats and dogs both have the potential of awesomeness. Why make a fight out of it?

Nice comparisons! However, a key one is missing - cats, if allowed out of the house (see your point 10), can be enormously destructive of wildlife. They kill more birds in the Upper Midwest, for example, than all natural predators combined. In Australia, they have driven many marsupial species to or past the brink of extinction. Worldwide, they have extirpated dozens of species. While dogs can also be destructive of wildlife, their effects do not remotely approach those of cats run wild.

Close... but I have to say it is a dead even tie. So many good and logical points. But they were created equally... Both have pros and cons. Cats are independent while dogs rely on a pack. Dogs are clearly more usefull to us, but does that mean they win?

  • Tampa Pet Photography

Dogs are more usefull to humans. But cats are more independent. WHO WINS? We all win. Cats and dogs are awesome!

But on the smart chart, cats are at the lower end right next to chickens!

While dogs rule, cats have staff! I fear we are trying to compare apples and oranges again. It is simply a choice we each can make.

  • Ruth
    May 17th, 2010 at 5:23 pm

People ask people "are you a cat person or a dog person?" I don't even want to consider having to make a choice. One of each is fine.
But on the negative side, I have to agree with Tom when he points out, correctly, that cats on the loose are menaces to birds - and to gardens (they don't use their owner's plot). And dogs on the loose are menaces too. If you have pets - bring them up responsibly.

Interesting observation about cats and dogs:
Dogs are honest, they are not smart enough to understand deceit. Cat's on the other hand can and do deceive their owners if it suits their needs.

Only a putrid cat owner would say "nuff said", as if THEIR word is best and last. (they wish!)
A dog is a man's best friend. A cat is a woman's. All others are trans... (except for women who love dogs, because they are the SMART ones!)
If you love cats, leave the window open on your new car... you'll change your mind.
Hike through the woods with your pet. If it's a dog, you'll both have a good time; if it's a cat, ... get a ladder!
A cat is little more than a moving decoration. (I used constraint...)
Ask my dog, he'll tell you: ALL cats are stupid!

Response to Dominic Lee.... The intelligence level of someone making a remark like you did, suggests that their IQ level is probably on par with lizards. Dogs and cats have more smarts than many people I know.

In response to Ron - It is apparent that you severely lack the intellect to handle yourself in a debate which is why you are resulting to insults.

I'm guessing your dog is smarter than you are which is why you are stating to just ask your dog.

I've had both. I've loved both, but there's something about the characteristics of the Dog, that's cats simply do not have. Deep down everyone knows this is true.

I'd like to see a cat lead the blind to cross the street, or protect it's owner from a bear, warn police of a fire, or sit beside it's dead owner for days until found. Somehow they say cats are smarter, but they're completely incapable of loyalty and serving a purpose...if they truly are smarter and choose to make themselves useless, so called independent (read, not trustworthy) then, that says much about the animal. Dogs are courageous, loyal, always happy to see you, will find their ways home if lost over thousands of miles, and follow your coffin till they bury you and wait for your return for years on end. Give me a dog.

cats and dogs are great, I've had both since birth and love them both. they aren't smart as people any way you look at it so they require attention, if a domesticated animal is causing you problems then blame the owner.

both animals are social as in wanting to cuddle, greet, or just hang out with humans but that is mutual benefit for both, no sacrifice there, but dogs seem to worry about their owners benefit on occasion, they show concern for their owners and will give their own life to protect you every time, if you werent around they would simply run, evidence they are doing it simply for your benefit. they will become more social to others if they are used to meeting many like a party house enviroment but will allways protect if you cry for help. cats would just cuddle with your attacker so long as they gave it some attention. they are just animals though, they both love, just different types

both will do little things like knock over drinks or tear up furniture but they arent smart enough to realize their actions, thats where the owner comes in to tell them not to do that.

Dogs and cats are both great pets! I have both, but dogs are dirtier. There is nothing worse when a dog cleans his privates or starts humping on your leg. Dogs are trained to do what they do. Cats are the same way. I have a cat that knows my emotions, whenever I am upset she is there to cheer me. Cats are more like humans, you have to earn their trust where as a dog, if you feed him he is a freind for life.

  • They do protects you from bears!
