Vintage Photos of Dressed-up Pets

Putting animals in human clothing has been a source of humor for …well, a long time. We really don't know who thought of it first, but as soon as photography got to the point that you didn't have to hold a camera's shutter open for a long time, such shenanigans have left evidence behind. io9 has a collection of 50 photos of dogs and cats dressed in clothing or otherwise put into human situations. The dog pictured above was a celebrity of 1903 named Bud.

The physician Horatio Nelson Jackson and his friend Sewall K. Crocker were the first people to drive an automobile across America. It took sixty-three days to drive from San Francisco to New York City. Somewhere in Ohio they obtained a Pit Bull named Bud.

He looks fetching in his driving goggles, doesn't he? Besides the 50 photographs by such notables as Harry Wittier Frees, Harry Pointer, and Leslie Jones, there's a video and some gifs from the Dogville Shorts. -via mental_floss
