Every year, Atom Films hosts an online competition for Star Wars fan films. The film above, entitled “The Unconscious Sith” is a well-directed depiction of a young boy entering a comic book and moving from panel to panel, gradually becoming a Sith. It won the George Lucas Selects Award.

I’m not sure if that’ll make you more or less likely to watch it.

Star Wars Uncut Is Complete

Posted by John Farrier in Science Fiction, Star Wars on August 19, 2010 at 5:27 pm

Star Wars Uncut is a crowd-sourced project which divided Episode IV into fifteen second segments and then invited people to recreate and film them. All segments have been completed and compiled, and developer Casey Pugh is working on the legal issues that are delaying its release. Anyway, many clips are available at the link, which is the project page.

R2D2 Gets Married

Posted by John Farrier in Science Fiction, Star Wars on August 19, 2010 at 3:08 pm

One of the highlights of Star Wars Celebration V was that R2D2 tied the knot. You can watch the video of the grand spectacle here (warning: self-starting). He married Bonnie Burton, the editor of StarWars.com.

Really, she’s deluding herself if she thinks that he’s going to be faithful.

The Empire Strikes Back as a Silent Film

Posted by John Farrier in Science Fiction, Star Wars, Video Clips on August 17, 2010 at 1:13 pm

(Video Link)

It’s been done before, but not this well. This one is finely executed, down to the warped film and John Williams theme played on a piano. It was made by a French team in 2007 and modified this past June.

Report: Action Figure Sales Saved Han Solo’s Life

Posted by John Farrier in Star Wars, toys on August 13, 2010 at 7:28 pm

Gary Kurtz was the producer of the first two Star Wars films, as well a contributing director. He has a lot to say about George Lucas’ motivations, and it’s not positive:

“I could see where things were headed,” Kurtz said. “The toy business began to drive the [Lucasfilm] empire. It’s a shame. They make three times as much on toys as they do on films. It’s natural to make decisions that protect the toy business, but that’s not the best thing for making quality films.”

He added: “The first film and ‘Empire’ were about story and character, but I could see that George’s priorities were changing.”[...]

“The emphasis on the toys, it’s like the cart driving the horse,” Kurtz said. “If it wasn’t for that the films would be done for their own merits. The creative team wouldn’t be looking over their shoulder all the time.”[...]

“We had an outline and George changed everything in it,” Kurtz said. “Instead of bittersweet and poignant he wanted a euphoric ending with everybody happy. The original idea was that they would recover [the kidnapped] Han Solo in the early part of the story and that he would then die in the middle part of the film in a raid on an Imperial base. George then decided he didn’t want any of the principals killed. By that time there were really big toy sales and that was a reason.”

X-Wing Mailbox

Posted by John Farrier in Arts & Crafts, Science Fiction, Star Wars on August 12, 2010 at 6:09 pm

Greg Smith made a mailbox that looks like a X-Wing fighter:

I made this so long ago, it is actually in need of weathering repairs and repainting. I never expected it to survive vandalism or theft for half a decade. But at five feet long and a five foot wingspan, theft would be quite difficult. Everybody from letter carriers to pizza delivery go out of their way to say how much they like it.

Adidas Producing a Wookie Suit

Really, though: less nylon, and more fur. You know, for authenticity.

I guess one could skin a Wookie to go really authentic.

Star Wars Art Inspired by Roy Lichtenstein

deviantART user Bergie81 created five works of Star Wars-inspired art that reflects the style of Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. The image pictured above, showing Han Solo being frozen in carbonite, was inspired by the 1963 work “Drowning Girl“, currently owned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Mickey Mouse Boba Fett

Posted by John Farrier in Arts & Crafts, Science Fiction, Star Wars on August 6, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Custom toymaker MARXMITH created the above figure thanks to a new marketing scheme by Disney calls “VinylNation”:

Disney has figured out how to make Mickey Mouse cool again. During the time that I designed for Disney, the idea of straying from the the core concept of Mickey Mouse was frowned upon. It was understandable. Mickey Mouse is an institution. Sure, he’s evolved over the years. But Mickey has always been a very safe character. Rarely was the design of Mickey Mouse embellished on. He had a few outfits, but he was always drawn according to a very strict set of guidelines.

Every Lightsaber Ignition and Retraction in Star Wars in 2:26

YouTube user Landstrider, in six hours of work, compiled every scene of a lightsaber being turned on or off.

The first one always bothered me a little. I mean, Luke almost bisects Obi Wan the first time that he picks up a lightsaber. The Jedi need something like Jeff Cooper’s four rules of gun safety.

Beer Keg R2D2

Posted by John Farrier in Arts & Crafts, Science Fiction, Star Wars on July 31, 2010 at 4:06 am

American artist Lockwasher made this R2D2 figure out of a 4.7 liter Heineken keg for the 2010 San Jose Super Toy Show. Heineken? That doesn’t strike me as the right beer for Artoo.

So, I put it to you, my dear intoxicated readers: if Darth Vader, Han Solo, Leia, and Luke Skywalker were beers, which beers would they be?

George Lucas, Master Businessman

Posted by John Farrier in Science Fiction, Star Wars on July 31, 2010 at 3:57 am

Michael Pinto wrote a long, thoughtful essay describing the many ways that George Lucas broke the standard rules of Hollywood business in order to become successful. For example, Pinto says that Lucas’ decision to leave Hollywood immediately after the first movie probably preserved his creativity:

Not too long after the success of Star Wars in 1978 Lucas went to work on constructing the Skywalker Ranch near Nicasio, California. What’s amazing to me about this is that instead of embracing Hollywood as the center of his operations Lucas instead fled north to get away from tinsel town. From a corporate culture point of view this allowed Lucas to “think outside of the box”. And in many ways his move reminds me a great of how Microsoft founder Bill Gates made it a point to not center his company in silicon valley, but rather in Redmond, Washington where they would thrive in isolation.

On an immediate level this allows Lucas to focus on the product instead of getting caught up in the trappings of the film industry. The practical result of this is that it allows the people who work in the marketing department to avoid the “me too” approach. Hollywood is famous for not taking risks, but if you’re going break through the noise you have to chances — and Lucas has avoided that trap which in turn has helped his longevity.
