Question of the Day

By John Farrier in Questions & Discussions, Star Trek on Aug 16, 2010 at 1:22 am

Since I was about seven years old, I loved Star Trek and had managed to watch every episode in syndication by the time that I was ten. Although there was competition, to me, the most gripping episode was and remains “The Doomsday Machine.” The dramatic tension is riveting, especially when Kirk and Scotty managed to bring the Constellation back into combat and then drive it down the planet killer’s throat. And William Windom’s depiction of the mad Commodore Matthew Decker was excellent in its exquisite detail. Quite appropriately it was nominated for a Hugo Award and was Jimmy Doohan’s favorite. You can watch the whole episode here.

Which is your favorite episode from the original Star Trek?

    I take it you’ve seen the remastered version with state of the art effects.

    For me, it’s always been, and shall always be City on the Edge of Forever. I remember as a youngling being fascinated with The Guardian and all its power, and the story is the first to ever bring up paradox in time travel, to my knowledge. There’s humor, history, and Bones is crazy.

    And Joan Collins… meow!

    That said – I did find “the trouble with tribbles” enjoyable.

    I liked the one where they came to the planet where no one lived to adulthood. The place was run by the oldest kids 13-14 year olds.

    I see someone else shares my view on the matter: City on the Edge of Forever is by far the best, most thought-provoking episode of ST:TOS

    @JohnnyCat — actually, I haven’t seen the remastered version. I linked to a clip from it because it was handy on YouTube.

    @vonskippy — I never understood the appeal of “The Trouble with Tribbles.” The author of that episode did, however, write the best time travel novel ever.

    @Gauldar — try it again. It’s working for me. It’s an official CBS video, so I’d be surprised if they pulled it suddenly.

    @bob — that was “Miri.

    @playtrombone64 — I’d easily put “City on the Edge of Forever” within the top 5, if not top 3. Not surprisingly, it’s written by Harlan Ellison, a top-notch professional sci-fi writer.

    I think my favorite would have to be Amok Time but I loved so many that it’s hard to choose. I can’t help but have a soft spot for the silly episodes such as Naked Time and I, Mudd. Especially the ones where Spock seem exceptionally out of character.

    “City” is kind of an obvious answer, but that’s my choice anyway. “Doomsday Machine” is a very good choice as well. I think my #2 though would be “Mirror, Mirror”.

    Are we going to have questions about the spinoffs too? I have very strong opinions on TNG and DS9. (If only there were some other Star Trek fans on the Internet!)

    Some of my favorites are the where they basically get to use the back lot, such as City On The Edge Of Forever, the one where the planet is run in a Nazi esthetic/order, and the one where they come to a planet ran by people emulating 1920s mobsters, featuring Vic Tayback.

    @Lex — I agree about “I, Mudd.” Especially the final scene in which Harry Mudd encounters his multiple wives.

    @Kevin R — That’s a good idea! I’ll post that right away.

    @Gary James — Now that there are rules to Fizzbin, it’s possible for Trekkies to play out this episode.
