Genevieve Bujold: The Woman Who Could Have Been Captain Janeway

(YouTube Link)

Kate Mulgrew, who played Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, was not the first pick for that role. In fact, Mulgrew only got it after another actress quit midway through the filming of the first episode. Here’s a scene from that episode with that actress, Genevieve Bujold.

Do you think that she would have made a good Janeway?

I found this video at list of fourteen facts about Star Trek that you might not know, which you can view at the link.

I knew she was the first Janeway, but I’ve never seen this footage.

Even from this short clip, I can see that Kate Mulgrew brought a lot of qualities to the role that made her a better choice.

Ooh yeah, so glad this lady quit. Quite the snoozer. Doesn’t have the edge that Mulgrew had. This lady… I dunno, if I was in deep poo and had to report to her I’d fall asleep during her lecture. Mulgrew had authority, you would need a change of shorts after getting a verbal smackdown from her.

I am saddened that we would never have the scene where she looks at a guy and says, “We’re all going to die, aren’t we?” Well, we’ll always have that in Waterworld.

She seems uncomfortable with the technogabble

Nope, not as good an actress. Doesn’t seem to be a ship’s captain at all. Not a good Janeway – glad she quit.

That lady is definitely a snoozer… Bor-ing. The series wouldn’t have gotten through the first season with her. You can tell she’s just not comfortable in the role.

Funnily enough, I am just now introducing Voyager to my 16-yo son, and after 11 episodes, he thinks it’s the best Trek series of the bunch. Mulgrew definitely had an edge, and brought enthusiasm and humanity to the role of Captain. Not to mention that she was not afraid to be a woman, too.

Mulgrew gave the role a better pace and bit more bitchy in my opinion.

I have seen this before and I always wondered what the heck they were thinking when hired her there is no comparison, Kate is Janeway she fit like it was wrote for her.

Mulgrew’s blatant smoker’s voice always put me off. Really? Women still get smoker’s voice in the sanitized future of Star Trek? We’ve eliminated currency, and all types of medical problems of the current age, but not smoker’s voice.. or smoking, for that matter?

Fact… Janeway and I have the same birthday.

Nice piece of Star Trek trivia that I wasn’t aware of.

I remember being very excited upon hearing Bujold would star in a new Trek series. But later read an article that she pulled out of the show. One of the reasons cited at that time was that she didn’t like the design and fit of the uniforms and became insulted when it was suggested that her’s be padded to increase the size of her breasts then was told to dye her gray hair.

Star Trek was a very innovative show to begin with but remember the only reason they developed the amazing device known as a Tricorder was to give them an excuse to have a pretty crew member join the men on their missions. They needed something for her to carry.
