10 Under-Appreciated Sci-Fi Movies

By John Farrier in Movies, Questions & Discussions, Science Fiction on Jul 21, 2010 at 1:29 am

LikeMe has a list of ten science fiction movies that perhaps don’t get as much respect as they should. I certainly agree with one of the selections — Gattaca (1997). It was a well-written, well-acted, and well-directed dystopia. Sadly, it earned back only a third of its budget at the box office.

Which science fiction movie do you think is under-appreciated?

I just watched Gattaca for the 5th time just last week, and can’t agree more. I love the imagery of the crippled, genetically perfect Jerome crawling up a spiral staircase, as though struggling up some giant DNA strand.

I really liked the Cube, Cube 2 – Hypercube, and Cube Zero (which was the last in the series but the storyline is a prequel).

Spooky, weird, somewhat hard to understand, plus the opening sequence in the first movie is a real attention getter.

Special effects are dated (first movie was released in 1997) but still worth a watching or three.

Yes! Cube was brilliant, and shamefully ripped into the first AVP in an oblique way. How about Dark City?

I first saw Gattaca during a high school psychology class. Needless to say, I loved it.

“A boy and his dog” is one of my all time favs. 10 yrs after I married my husband I discovered it was one of his too. Wish they would play it on TV

I haven’t seen the one with Bale or Maclachlan but otherwise that is a solid list of some of my all time scifi films. Silent Running seems like an odd choice, but I remember my dad showing it to me when I was a kid and it was one of the first scifi films to get an emotional response out of me. Moon and Sunshine are most likely my two top pics on the list. Now for under appriciated I remember an animated film with a story by Asimov called “Light Years.” I don’t think I have seen it in years but I still remember it fondly.

My lovely girlfriend says Puppet Masters, starring Donald Sutherland. I say Strange Days, but now Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow. Starring Ralph Fiennes and a simply beautiful Angela Bassett. Everyone should see this movie, it’s really great!

What about Contact? It’s a brilliant film, from a brilliant mind! And I’m agree with Vonskippy, The Cube trilogy it’s amazing, and agree also with Johnny Cat, How about Dark City? ;) Thanks for the list, I didn’t know some films from it.
