Man Builds Batmobile Replica for $1 Million

Photo: Simon Måssebäck

Leif Garvin of Sweden spent about $1 million building his own Batmobile. It’s built onto the chassis of a 1973 Lincoln Continental and has a 700 hp engine. Like the, uh, real Batmobile, it’s loaded with all sorts of gadgetry:

There’s sat-nav to help you find the scene of the crime (and other helpful POIs), a plasma TV for video calls to Albert (and for distraction during Stockholm traffic jams), voice recognition to keep your fighting hands free (and avoid nasty fines), height-adjustable suspension for navigating dramatic obstacles in your path (and speed bumps), a rear-view camera to watch your back (and help with tight parking squeezes), and machine guns for, er, shooting stuff. Worryingly, there is no word on whether said firearms are real…

UPDATE 10/4/09: Simon Måssebäck emailed to correct a mistake. He didn’t make the Batmobile — a man named Leif Garvin did. Thanks, Simon, especially for allowing us to use your photo!

Movies That Never Were

“For every movie that gets made there are a hundred that never happen. And for every version of a movie you see in theaters, there are a dozen other versions that never made it past the script stage.” Thus begins an article that Devin Faraci has written at movie site CHUD, chronicling the rise and fall of versions of movies you probably didn’t even know existed. Among the theoretical films discussed? A Star Trek IV starring Eddie Murphy, a Planet of the Apes film directed by controversial helmer Oliver Stone, and the tantalizing possibility of an ultra-realistic Batman directed by the visionary Darren Aronofsky:

Aronofsky wasn’t interested in making anything that resembled a Batman film that had come before. He also wasn’t interested in hewing close to Miller’s original comics. This film saw Bruce Wayne wandering the streets after the murder of his parents; he’s taken in by an auto mechanic named Big Al (Aronofsky’s version of Alfred). Bruce grows up a borderline psychotic who begins taking violent vengeance on street thugs. He turns an abandoned subway station below Big Al’s auto shop into his version of the Batcave. He puts a bus engine in a black Lincoln Continental as his version of the Batmobile. Over the course of the story he assembles the elements of the costume and persona of Batman (or The Bat-Man, as he’s called).

This Batman is the reality of what a guy in a costume beating up criminals would be like – insane, overdramatic, barely likable.

Who among us hasn’t seen a movie and wondered what might have been? Have any similar thoughts? Think that some of these movies would have been better as the alternate versions described here? Feel free to discuss in the comments below.

Grand Entrances (or) How I Got to the Prom

I drove my own car to the prom, but it’s been so long I don’t remember if I bothered to wash it. In this century, high school students want to make the ride to the prom something they -and their friends- will always remember.

Parade Float

12 promgoers in Racine, Wisconsin rode on a homemade parade float to the Park High School prom in 2004. The float was built onto a flatbed trailer, highlighted by 1,500 twinkling lights powered by a generator. The teens and their families designed, built, and painted the float.

Horse-Drawn Carriage

480_promhorses

It’s hard to beat a romantic leisurely ride behind horses. Bee Tree Trail Horse and Wagon Tours transports students to proms in horse-drawn wagons in Pennsylvania. This picture from their website is of a 2007 prom in Fogelsburg, Pennsylvania.

Armored Military Vehicle

480_promtank

A group of year 11 students from Abbey College in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, arranged to ride to their prom in an armored vehicle from Commando Elite Paintball Games of Monkswood.

“The journey was really exciting with all of us allowed to take turns in the two gun turrets of the vehicle. Inside it was more comfortable than we had imagined. We certainly got plenty of attention en route and when we arrived at the hall.”

Tank

PromTank

Gary called Tank Limo to hire a tank for his son and his friends to ride to the prom in Dorset, England.

Fire Truck

Firefighter Mike Shultz and his date Amy Cochran traveled to the North High prom in 2006 aboard a Long Meadow (Maryland) Volunteer Fire Department truck, chauffeured by Deputy Chief Eckstine (scroll down to the bottom of the linked page for the story). Yes, it helps if you or your date is a firefighter! But there are commercial fire trucks you can rent. Renting a fire truck is easy in Britain, with many resources like Casey’s Cars, where you can rent a red or pink fire truck as well as an ambulance. There are a few rentals available in the US, such a Hire a Fire Truck.

Helicopter

Nikki Kennedy was delivered to the Muhlenberg South (Kentucky) High School prom in 2006 in a helicopter! But you won’t want to earn the ride the same way she did. In 2005, Nikki was seriously injured in a traffic accident that left her in a coma for two weeks. She was pronounced dead at the scene, but recovered and finished her senior year as a homebound student. The Air Evac Lifeteam later voted her as a “miracle patient” and awarded her a ride to the prom in the air ambulance.

Heavy Equipment

MacKenzie Stevens and Cally Hardy from Moncton, New Brunswick went to the 2007 JMA Armstrong High School prom in the bucket of a front-end loader!

Movie and TV Vehicles

PromTVcars

You can rent a limo, or a bus, or a hearse, but if you really want to make an impressive entrance at your prom, you can rent a replica of a famous vehicle from TV or the movies. If you live in the UK, there are quite a few places you can hire such vehicles. We’ve featured the A-Team Van on Neatorama before. Star Car Hire in Britain has replicas of the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard, the Delorean from Back to the Future, James Bond cars, and more movie and TV cars available for your prom. If you want a particular movie car in the United States, check out Star Car Central, a database for movie and TV cars. These are privately owned, and only a few are available for hire. Some that are (if you are in the right area) include the ‘66 Batmobile, the Mad Max Interceptor, and the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine. If you do, please send us a picture!

If Presidential Candidates Were Cars, What Kind of Cars Would They Be?

Texas Governor Rick Perry recently endorsed Rudy Guliani for the 2008 US Presidential Election. The governor, however, likened his endorsement to buying a pickup truck – all the selections had at least one thing that he didn’t like.

Craig Malisow of HoustonPress disagreed – he has better suggestions of what vehicle each presidential candidate is most like. For example:

Ron Paul: Batmobile. Batshit crazy. The best thing is, if Paul wins, his V.P. can be a Robin-like character. You know, a useless little man-child in tights.

See if you agree with 14 of candidate-car pairings! LinkThanks Keith Plocek!

Quotes of Batman Lecturing Robin

Here’s a (tripod!) website with tons of funny quotes of Batman lecturing Robin, as seen in the 1960’s Adam West Batman TV series. For example:

Batman: "Better put 5 cents in the meter."
Robin: "No policeman’s going to give the Batmobile a ticket."
Batman: "This money goes to building better roads. We all must do our part."

Robin: "Holy molars! Am I ever glad I take good care of my teeth!"
Batman: "True. You owe your life to dental hygiene."

Robin: "You can’t get away from Batman that easy!"
Batman: "Easily."
Robin: "Easily."
Batman: "Good grammar is essential, Robin."
Robin: "Thank you."
Batman: "You’re welcome."

From the website

George Perkins, known as Batman, stands near his “Batmobile” in downtown Americus, Ga., on Friday, Oct. 27, 2006. Perkins, a resident of Union Springs, Ala., has helped about 40 Americus residents rid their homes and offices of bats, but the town’s historic district still has a serious bat problem. He normally wears ordinary work clothes, but puts on the Batman outfit for parades.
