Frenemy, Flash Mob, and Other New English Words

Friend/Enemy Ambigram, by Naguib and Fadilah of Nagfa

English, she’s a’changin’. The latest edition of the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary are 100 words that you may already be using:

There are words such as locavore (one who eats foods grown locally), frenemy (someone who acts like a friend but is really an enemy), waterboarding (an interrogation technique use to induce the sensation of drowning), vlogs (a blog that contains video material) and webisode (a TV show that can be viewed at a website).

There’s also flash mob (a group of people summoned electronically to a designated spot at a specified time to perform an indicated action before dispersing) and green-collar (involving actions for protecting the natural environment).

Some words that just now made the cut have been around for generations. The term "sock puppet" — a false online identity used for deceptive purposes — was tracked to 1959 but has taken on new popular use with people using fake IDs on social networking sites.

Ambigram T-Shirt Designs

Hello, everyone! I’d like to let you know that we have a few new ambigram T-shirts on the Neatorama Online Store. Usually ambigrams are rotationally symmetric – but these ones are reflectionally special – they spell a different message when seen on the mirror! These ambigrams were designed by ambigram artists extraordinaire Naguib and Fadilah of Nagfa blog.

This one above, modeled by the lovely Barbara, is the Clever/Stupid Ambigram – an updated take on the classic "I’m with Stupid" T-shirt.

Take a look at the rest of the designs: Link

Domain Name Ambigrams

We had a few posts on ambigrams before on Neatorama (I love that stuff!) , but never this: Erik R. of the aptly-named Erik’s blog was thinking of domain names that look the same when rotated 180° and came up with a couple.

Can you think of more? Link

Kermit the Frog Ambigram.

Neatorama loooves ambigrams (what? Look it up [wiki]). Naguib and Fadilah of Nagfa blog just happen to have some of the neatest examples around. I particularly like this creative Kermit The Frog ambigram!

Check out the blog’s ambigram challenge, where you can submit your own ambigrams (right now, the phrase is "shark attack"). There are already 44 very creative entries.

So Many Dynamos.

Did you read the Da Vinci Code? Remember the ambigrams (text art that looks the same when read upside down)? Here are two very cool ambigram websites: Link and Link

While we’re at it, checkout another type of word play:

Tarzan raised Desi Arnaz’ rat.
Damn! I, Agassi, miss again! Mad!
Did I do, O God, did I as I said I’d do? Good, I did!

Cool list of palindromes. Link
