What was your most memorable present ever? (Christmas, Birthday, Hanukkah, etc.)

This is a tough one because I got married and moved to England all during my birthday week in '06, so everything, gifts and otherwise that year are extra special. But in terms of a present alone, I would have to say that last year's birthday/anniversary gift is the most memorable because it is impossible not to adore, and even more impossible to ignore a now 100 pound Rhodesian Ridgeback.

I have two wonderful Christmas presents:
In a nutshell...23 years ago, my then-ten-years-old brother nearly died over the holidays. He was born with a condition called hydrocephalus, and has a shunt that pumps excess fluid from his brain to his abdominal cavity. It malfunctioned big-time and he went down like a sack of drowned cats right as we were getting ready to eat turkey dinner. He spent the entire time from Thanksgiving to right after New Year's barely clinging to life. Shortly after midnight on New Year's, his vitals stabilized. Two days later he was pinching the heinies of all the nurses and staging wheelchair races in the hallway.
And the second one is due shortly. I don't know if Tabitha will be here today, tomorrow, or this Friday when I'll have to be induced...but the best present I'll get for this Christmas isn't going to come wrapped in anything more than a layer of slippery gunk.
Happy Holidays, Y'all!

I got a mychild doll. It was something I heard my mom talking about on the phone with her friend but that she had found one. But I didn;t get it on Christmas. The next day it came from Santa....hmmmmm

The best present I got was my terror of a kitten Desmond.
Three of my good friends and my boyfriend conspired against me while I was on vacation in June, and the day I got back, my boyfriend drove up with a friend and asked me to help bring what he brought over in, and opened up the back to this tiny little two month old kitten.
Now he's eight months old and follows me around the apartment everywhere, sleeps next to me, and I often wake up in the morning with toys in my bed that he brought in the middle of the night because he wanted to play.

BeagleLady - Wow how cool is that? Jolly ol England. Yeah! I'm sorta kinda part English. Scottish actually, hope none of them heard me say that.
lilrawker - That was nice. You gonna make me get all teary eyed. (no kidding whatsoever)
2D - Someone was definitely watching over your brother. Think we know who it was too.
Hey be nice - It might be a "a layer of slippery gunk" but it's YOUR layer of slippery gunk. Got that? Best of luck on the wee one lady.
lir - That brought back a wonderful memory. Wasn't Christmas, my folks were away which was very unusual. I was home probably with my sister who would have been old enough to
take care of me. I was about 11? Folks come back at night and one asked me to go bring a box in from the car. So little me goes and and carries this big, for me, box back to the house. Promise you won't laugh? I looked in the box and said "Oh, a statue." Was a little beagle pup just sitting there not moving much. That was my first dog too and I got the honor of naming him. Tyke. Normally that would by quite a word for one my age but I remember thinking it was Buster Browns dog's name. (BB was a brand of child's shoes back then.) Anyway thank you for the memory! (always was a tad daft)Darn, almost forgot. My very most best Christmas present was when I got a Betsy Wetsy doll. Since I was a little boy that was definitely weird but I was always kind of different. BW dolls real real popular, was like an ordinary doll but she could ummmm how do I say this? tinkle.
GreenGirl you can smack me all you want. It was your present that put the idea in my goofy brain. Not to mention it's 0639 EST and I am punch drunk and slap happy right now. I do apologize, please forgive me.

The birth of my children. My wife passed out after the birth of our first, and I overcame my fear of holding such a fragile newborn and helped the nurse out.

@ Alex
Dang! That sounds intense!
Can't imagine what it must feel like becoming a Father for the first time.My most memorable present was just this past June when my family pooled in money and got me a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi Camera! I love photography and this was just so awesome.

You know alex, it's a post like that that makes someone who thinks that their best gift was a camera or something feel really stupid. Congradulations though!

i live on the south texas central gulf coast, where it snows maybe once a decade, and its usually a flurry that melts as soon at it touches anything, and you have to look really hard to spot the snowflakes. i had always dreamed of a white christmas since i was a little kid, but i knew i would never see it. well, on christmas eve 2004, it started to snow. at first it was the hard to see melting snowflakes at 10 am, then it snowed off and on really lightly around noon and with that the town went insane. everyone was taking pictures and freaking out cause it was the most snow most people had ever seen (it didnt even qualify as a dusting, though). Then most of the afternoon it was continually ice-pelleting (is that a word?) for several hours. everything was covered in it. we thought there was no way it could get better than that. but that evening it start snowing - huge snowflakes that accumulated quickly, and it kept snowing harder and harder and harder. people were crying, they were so happy! people who had never met before were having snowball fights, everyone was taking pictures and wandering around town, just totally in awe. the snow did not stop till 6 am christmas day. christmas morning, we woke up to the most beautiful sunrise id ever seen, and everything was covered in over a foot of snow. that was the best christmas present ever. that event is now known as the South Texas Christmas Miracle.

Ali S. - After that (below) I'd be afraid to open my mouth. GGGG I've always had a love for photography. Too bad you aren't close by. I have an old Time-Life series of books on photography. There's a few missing but I hate tossing out books. Maybe some day
I'll find a good home for them? My father spent 20 years in the photography side of the Signal Corps. One tip he gave me on taking good pics was "get close, get close, get close." Okay he'd didn't use those words but the idea was to get as close as you possibly can to your subject. I think it probably still holds true. Enjoy the camera!
Another key to the subject is learn about light. The best way to do that is study B&W photography. Yeah, I know, how gauche, but again it is so very very true. Learning as much about light as you can will give untold dividends when you take color pics.blakdragon "You know alex, it's a post like that that makes someone who thinks that their best gift was a camera or something feel really stupid."
cl - Being from Philly I cannot even imagine what a thrill that must have been!

Hahaha! Oh, when you work on the Internet you learn to grow thick skin.
Regarding the tips for the camera thank you! I've been using a Nikon FM3A (film) SLR camera for a while so my family wanted to "upgrade" my hobby into digital. Oh, and the Time-Life photography books I've seen in the Library here so don't worry! You are too kind good sir!

Hahaha! Oh, when you work on the Internet you learn to grow thick skin.
Sometimes I wonder how I got to this age being as thin skinned as I am. I guess I like
to think of it as being sensitive. (don't let that out!)Regarding the tips for the camera thank you! I've been using a Nikon FM3A (film) SLR
Film? Can one still buy a film camera any more? I've got a Miniature Speed Graphic camera that I would love to see if it still works. It's the small version not the large one that all press photographers used to lug around. You loaded sheet film into the back one at a time. Looks like it takes 2 1/4 X 3 1/4 inch sheets. It's big brother used 4X5. With that huge a negative the print quality was fabulous. Has the flash on the right, the whole bit.

If you're ever in the area the offer is still good. Pick up a half a dozen rolls of B&W film for the Nikon. The knowledge you gain will be unimaginable.

Hubby recently bought a simple little point-and-click Canon that turned out to be a real bargain, and it has almost all the bells and whistles of an SLR to boot. If anyone's ever searching for a simple camera that's well worth the money, the Canon PowerShot A590 IS is definitely worth checking out!
No, I'm not getting paid to plug it, either...
Oh BTW--SparkS--I *finally* got those downloads to work! (Thanks to Hubby! Can you believe it was the dinky little Turing window that defeated me?!) Thanks for the cool name info! I love how it popped up with my name as "Unique"...LOL Yep, my name is definitely not found very often, that's for sure...I was named after my very Irish paternal great-grandmother, and I think it's a variation on Dennis (another popular name with that particular branch of the family tree...). If that's true, then it's a variant of an Anglicized version of Dionysius. But I've never been 100% sure about that. Either way, it made school life...interesting. Heh.

2D, Okay, I'll bite, what's a "turing window"? I hope they looked okay. Sometimes the scroll work gets all hosed up at the other end. Hey, there's another really neat .pdf file I can make for you but might be better if done in an Email. It's a mini newspaper
with the headline being something important that happened on your birthday. The rest is all things related to that year. My EMail address is on the bottom of that .pdf. I was thinking you might want to put the wee ones name thingy in a baby book? The newspaper would be cool also but there's a lag time for the info for 2008 to get added. New version doesn't come out til around March/April I think. If you'd like some newspapers all I need is full birth name and DOB. I've been making both for others for years and years so if you want any more name thingys give me the info.If anyone would like a first name print out post the name and color and I'll UL and send you the link so you can get the .pdf file.

A Turing window is the security dealie-bopper that pops up with a graphic of a random string of melted letters and numbers that you have to enter into the appropriate field. You know, the one that guarantees that 1.) you're not a spambot, and 2.) you have a headache afterwards from trying to read the graphic.
How funny that you mention the newspaper! My husband's grandmother recently celebrated her 90th birthday and got a poster of one from one of my (his) aunts. It might be a fun idea to do one for Hubby this August or my son this September. I'm sure the lag time won't be an issue by then...! *grin!* As for the baby book idea...um, I have to get around to putting one together in the first place! I've been running on so little sleep these last two weeks, I don't even trust myself with crocheting! I'd probably cause some horrible fatal papercut accident if you handed me a scrapbook right now...
When I get back into a routine--hopefully soon--I'll probably start a family picture book. I've been wanting to do that for ages, and with Tabi here I have all the reason to put our pictures together into a nice book. Then when she and Zane get older I'll be able to show them just how dorky we all looked way back in the early 2000's...

2D - Okie doke, I know them, didn't know they had a particular name. I used to post comments now and then on the Neil Boortz site. Never figured out why but without fail every time I'd enter the Turing info the first time it would fail. Every time! Only way around that was I could sign onto the site as a registered user and it did away with the Turing thingy. That was a stroke of luck. BTW I HATE those damn things! A lot of times there is NO way to figure out what a particular character is. So your "2." fits pretty well. No need to wait til Aug or Sep you know. Only reason I think it best to do via Email is some may not want their DOBs all over the place. I think the newspapers are a LOT neater than the name thingies.
(why does Firefox accept "Aug" but not "Sep"? Strange)

Oh, that is an amazing camera! My professor used to have one and he'd show us how to use it for certain projects. Regarding the B&W film I used to use with my FM3A SLR "Ilford HP5 B&W Film" which was is stable and highly regarded film. When I used to work in the dark room at my school it was a ton of fun to develop and see your pictures come to life. That's something I miss now that I have a digital camera. I still have my FM3A and eventually I will start using that in tandem with my Canon Rebel for special purposes and to keep up my photographic skills. Like you said that the knowledge you gain from them is truely valuable!
I do believe you can find plates from specialty camera shops as many photographers like to use various cameras and film types for various reasons! I highly suggest that if you are looking for them is to hit up a local antique store or camera store and ask the owners if they know where you can find some.

Ali S. - One day, I should live that long, I'll get off my lazy heinie and try and get this Mini SG up to snuff and take some pics. It should be such a blast! I have a film magazine thingy that slides into the back. It holds two sheets of film. Apparently you pull out the plastic cover for the front one and take that pic. Then you slide the cover back in to protect it and flip the magazine around so the second sheet can be used. The Internet article said it's a very versatile camera. Considering it's over 60 years old it probably still is. The basics of photography will never change. Am sure I can get film online if nothing else. Being such an old fogie I am of mixed mind about digital photography. Being able to send photos across the globe in seconds is fabulous.
On the other hand the ease at which pictures can be manipulated really disturbs me since there's little way to tell what is real any more and not a forgery done on a computer.SD - I don't remember seeing a turing window on that file factory site when I checked to make sure the files were good.

Two years ago my boyfriend surprised me by taking me to a glass-blowing shop - they had us pick out the colors that we would like and blew us an ornament and my boyfriend and I added the last breath to the bubble before it was sealed. This ornament has been a symbol of our togetherness and means the world to me. Best present evah!!
