From the What Is It? blog: “A killick type anchor that was used on a small river freight boat in the 1800s, rocks were placed in the center of it to weigh it down.” David Kirkpatrick had the correct answer before many other people did. Update: the mystery object is a Civil War spar torpedo that was designed to be rammed into the hull of an enemy ship, and then detonated by a line from the torpedo to the submarine. The What Is It? blog has more about the origin of this particular torpedo, which is a replica of that used on Confederate submarine the H. L. Hunley. Berhard knew the correct answer right off! Update: The item in question is a tool that was used to make cavities in bullet molds during the Civil War, sometimes called a bullet mold cherry. Electronix and Winslow both knew the answer. Update: It took a while, but Edward K had the right answer. This is a pet ID holder. You can slip paper inside it and attach it to a dog’s collar. The funniest answer came from Randall, who called it “A hummelfubertapfer. Scandenavian beer drinker would use this timy hammer to break of the ice that formed on their beer as they drank it. This led to the colloquial joke of ‘Is that your wife’s nose or a Hummelfubertapfer?’ after which the the joke’s subject would either fly into a rage or laugh uproarously, depending on their level of inebriation.” Both win t-shirts from the NeatoShop!

Update: Stephen was the first to peg this item as a show business prop but also a real weight from a old-fashioned strongman show. It belonged to Warren Lincoln Travis, who indeed lifted this with his hips by a chain running through the hole in the middle, as Stephen said in his entry. It weighed between 1650 and 3750 pounds, depending on how much sand he filled it with. There’s even more information about it at the What Is It? blog.

Conjoined Bomb-omb twins. They’re waiting anxiously out outside of Dr. Goomba’s office to see if a surgery is possible. It’s been over a year now since the castle guards pulled them out of that koopley’s famous freak show on a case of child abuse. They look so happy in this picture, even though they’re nervous.

Update: To be honest, this week it was hard to tell which answers were honest guesses and which were trying to be funny! just a guess was the first with the correct answer: this is a measuring device for a horse’s neck, so collars can be custom-sized. The funniest answer prize goes to The Professor, who called it “Occam’s Hooky-Thing” that wasn’t quite as successful as Occam’s Razor.
