The Most Listened To Melody in the World

If you hit the “Play” button you can listen Peppe Giorri playing this beautiful Gran Vals para Guitarra a.k.a. Valse Grande… If you listen carefully, just after the 15-second mark you’ll probably recognize the so called Nokia Tune, which rings in more than 800,000 phones all over the world every day, making it the world’s most listened to melody. It is also repeated through out the whole vals.

The song is composed by Francisco Tárrega Eixea (1852, 1909) [wiki].

Listen the whole track, it’s wonderful.

VideoSift: Top Videos of the Week

One of the neatest feature of VideoSift is that you can select the top videos of the day, week, month or even year - this makes it darned easy to keep your pop culture knowledge up to date!

Here are five of the most viewed clips from the past week:

VideoSift: Cute Kids and Animals

Whoa! It’s the weekend and I’m late for our weekly collab with VideoSift (sorry, Sifters!), but let me make it up to you, with an offering of cute kids and animals! Now, how can you resist that?

Marimba Ponies Play the Sabre Dance
Marimba Ponies is an ensemble of 10 kid percussionists between the ages of 4 and 12 years old. Here’s a clip of them playing the Sabre Dance by Aram Khachaturian.

Link (Astute Neatorama readers will probably remember that we’ve featured Marimba ponies a while ago here, but their website had gone AWOL.)

Baby Otter
What’s cuter than otters? Baby otters! Beware, this clip is so sugary cute it’ll rot your teeth.

Link

Baby Human Laughing His Ass Off
Okay, so what’s cuter than a baby otter? Actually, a laughing human baby. Here’s a clip of Ethan laughing so hard he keeps on falling over.

Link

Sleeping Cat
Bwahahaha! Here’s a clip of a cat that sleeps in an … uh, interesting position (with tail a-waggin’ and all)

Link

Sleepy Baby
And to round up the picks, here’s a sleepy baby fighting to stay awake. Now I have to take a nap myself!

VideoSift: Sci-Fi Fandom Channel

For our weekly collab with VideoSift, let’s take a look at the Sci-Fi Fandom Channel, a repository of cool documentaries, trailers, and scenes from famous (and not so famous) sci-fi movies:

Death Star Cafeteria in Lego
There must be a cafeteria in Death Star, right? They’ve got to eat sometime… So here’s a comedy bit by Eddie Izzard, where Darth Vader runs into a bit of a problem in the Death Star canteen.

Link (NSFW language)

The Many Faces of Shatner
One can never have enough of William Shatner. Here’s an homage to the legend that is the incomparable Shatner.

Link

Monsters of the Atomic Age
In this documentary (26 min. long) Geoff Tarulli explores the nuclear fears in the 1950s and how they influenced the sci-fi movies of the time.

Link

H.R. Giger at Work
Take a look at H.R. Giger’s bizarre house and studio, which are filled with sketches and artwork. This was the first time I actually see the man behind the movie Alien and Species.

Link

Conan Visits Industrial Light and Magic
What happens when Late Night host and comedian Conan O’Brien visit George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic? Hilarity is what.

One of my favorite clip. Definitely: Link

VideoSift: Pick of the Week

Yay! Our weekly collab with VideoSift is here… Let’s take a look at five of the most fascinating videos playing at the world’s greatest video aggregator website:

Turbo Encabulator
Here’s a hilarious Chrysler training video circa 1990, instructing dealership technicians how to service a new transmission system: the turbo encabulator.

I think Neatorama reader Randall made this video: Link

Houdini’s Dog
Watch how this dog escapes the escape-proof dog pen, in about a minute, no less!

Link

Kermit’s Sausage Ad
We’ve seen Fred Flintstones pushing Winston cigarettes in a 1950s ad, here’s one more (albeit much less creepy): Kermit the Frog selling McGarry’s Sausage in the ’60s.

Link

Top 10 Home Shopping Bloopers
Crappy products + live home shopping TV = what could go wrong?

Here are the top 10 bloopers on the British home shopping TV channels: Link

Live Coelacanth
I think this last one is the best: a video of a Coelacanth, considered by scientists as a "living fossil," in its natural habitat off the coast of Indonesia.

The New and Improved VideoSift

The new VideoSift is here, and the community-based video aggregator is better than ever!

There was quite a bit of improvement "under the hood," with a new custom software written specifically for the site and new servers to handle the load. Visitors will immediately notice the streamlined look, thumbnail preview of the video clips, and a longer list of clips per page.

Congrats to the VideoSift folks who did an excellent job (I know how hard it is to move a site, let alone upgrading a content management system!).

All right, let’s take a look at a few of the coolest videos playing on the ‘Sift:

Bubbles in Space
What happen if you pop a tab of Alka-Seltzer in a floating ball of water in zero g? Astronaut Don Pettit did the experiment onboard the International Space Station.

Link (yes, similar to this post on Neatorama, but it’s so cool you should see it again)

Jackie Chan’s Ten Greatest Bloopers
Famous for doing his own stunts, Jackie Chan has gotten injured. A lot.

And of course, these mishaps were captured on film, and then shown as bloopers at the end of his movies: Link (Is there a bone this man hasn’t broken yet?)

HAL Returns (as Hybrid Assisted Limbs)
This mobile suit, developed by Professor Yoshiyuki Sankai of Tsukuba University, Japan, allows its wearer to boost the weight he or she can normally lift by a factor of 10!

Link

Amazing Hand Puppetry
Raymond Crowe is truly a master at hand puppetry - you just have to see for yourself:

Link

Police! Open Up!
Kicking down a door is a LOT harder than it looks like in the movies, as this police officer found out!

VideoSift: Spanning Time

One of the neatest things about VideoSift is how the website enables its users to group videos into "collectives" of niche topics. We’ve covered some of these collectives before, such as the Evolution in Action, Obscure Collective, and That’s Terrible! Who Gave That a Green Light?

Now, let’s take a look at a collective called Spanning Time, a collection of "historically momentous" video clips.

The Internet, Circa 1994
In February 1994, Richard Seltzer and Berthold Langer of Digital Equipment Corporation (creators of Mosaic, the first web browser) created this video clip predicting the future of the Internet.

And how right they were: Link

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope
In 1977, Terry Fox lost his leg to cancer. Three years later, he decided to run 3,300+ miles across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

Here’s a heartwarming story about human will and determination (at the same time, a heartbreaking story on why he had to stop): Link

Napalm Attack During the Vietnam War
This gruesome yet fascinating video clip shows an airstrike where napalm bombs were dropped on a village during the Vietname War.

The clip shows how devastating "the best anti-personnel bomb ever created" truly is: Link

The Spirit of ‘43
Here’s a US Government propaganda cartoon from the World War II era, stressing the importance of paying income tax starring … Donald Duck!

Link

Dance of the Soldiers
If the Cold War were a dance off, the Americans would’ve lost!

Here’s a strange clip of Soviet Army’s Dance of the Soldiers (with the obligatory Russian squatwork and harmonica acrobatics!) : Link

VideoSift: Top Picks in the Last 24 Hours

It’s time for another five awesome video clip from VideoSift! All of these clips are picked from just the last 24 hours (from when I prepare this post, that is). Now that’s quality sifting at the ‘Sift!

The Funniest Cats of the Internet
Yes, yes - they’re cat videos. But not just any cat videos - they’re the funniest you’ll see on the Internet. today!

Link

Be Kind Rewind
This trailer for an upcoming Michel Gondry movie starring Jack Black and Mos Def looks promising: what happen after a man whose brain becomes magnetized unintentionally erases every tape in his friend’s video store? They set to remake the lost films and shoot the movies themselves!

Hilarity ensues. Link

James Lipton Recites K-Fed’s "Freestyle"
Copyright laws prevents Conan O’Brien from playing a clip of the song, and K-Fed refused to come on the show and play the song live. So Conan invited James Lipton, dean emeritus of Inside the Actors Studio to recite the lyrics of K-Fed’s song "Freestyle."

This is for the haters … Link

Kim Jong Il Portrait in Blood
When artist Phil Hansen said that he’s given his sweat, blood, and tears for his art, he’s being quite literal!

Here’s a video clip of him drawing a giant picture of the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il with his own blood!

Link

Penguin Guy
Alfred David really, really likes penguins:

She thinks I’m crazy. At first it was a hobby, then it became a collection, then a passion, but now it’s become an obsession.

I really believe I’ve become a penguin.

Link (Astute readers will recall this was on Neatorama a while back)

Here are five of the cutest videos I found (yes, some were on Neatorama before, but heck, they’re SO cute, you can watch ‘em again and again)

VideoSift: Evolution in Action

Man, I love VideoSift’s collectives - this one’s called Evolution in Action, and is the "home to stupid people doing stupid things, fire-breathing mishaps, guys getting run over by their own cars, those that ignore the warning label, and anyone that gives up their personal dignity to qualify for the Darwin Awards."

Let’s take a look at five incredibly dumb moments captured on video:

How NOT to Cut Down a Tall Tree

The title is self-explanatory. Kids, don’t try this at home. Let me amend that: adults, don’t try this at home either.

Link

This is NOT How to Cut Tree Limbs, Either

Maybe the guy in the video above was doing it all wrong because he was alone with no one to watch over him. But would chopping down a tree limb with some friends make it go better?

Nope: Link

Redneck Roller Coaster

These guys take open air motoring one step higher: introducing the redneck roller coaster (yes, he’s steering from up there!)

Link

No Runway? No Problem! Just Use the Road!

Bad: running out of fuel mid-flight
Really Bad: having to land on a highway
Evolution in Action Bad: Trying to take off again using the highway as a runway, running into the truck that brought the fuel, and ending up in a ditch.

Link

Man Kicks Self in the Nuts

This one is a gem. It’s practically what the collective is made for.

Here’s Peter Coffin demonstrating his unique talent of kicking himself in the groin, on national TV "The Craziest Person in America"

VideoSift: Vintage Sci-Fi Clips.

Let’s take a look at VideoSift’s Sci-Fi Fandom collective, a neat collection of everything related to science fiction (with lots of vintage clips!)

Tron Lightbike
This brings back a lot of memories: the lightbike scene of the 1982 sci fi classic Tron. The arcade game was awesome, too.

Link

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, by Shatner!
Did you know that in 1968, William "Captain Kirk" Shatner did a cover of The Beatles’ Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds?

This Shatneriffic version was considered one of the worst pop recordings ever - it was so bad that it became a cult classic and thus will actually live on forever: Link

Flash Gordon Football Fight Scene
It doesn’t get any cheesier than this: the football scene from the 1980 Flash Gordon film! Quick someone make a "Flash" t-shirt!

VideoSift: Commercial Collective.

Here’s a VideoSift collective (user-created groups of videos) on some
strange and funny TV commercials:

Homer’s Smarter Brain

Here’s an ad for Intel’s Pentium II processor, titled "Homer’s Smarter Brain," all the way back from 1998.

Link

Captain Kirk’s Bizarre Transporter Accident

What happened when the Enterprise ran out of power? Here’s an ad for a power generating company featuring Captain Kirk of Star Trek in some sort of a transporter malfunction (I won’t tell you what it is, you’ve just got to see the video clip)

Link

If you’ve never seen a Chia Pet, you’ve missed a phenomenal 1980s fad. This is the original ad that made "Ch-ch-ch-chia!" catchphrase so popular.

Link

Chinese Baby Eating Jell-O

You just can’t get away with this kind of racially-insensitive ads anymore, which is why this 1960s Jell-o "chinese baby" ad is fantastic!

Link

Robbing a Sperm Bank

This funny commercial for Charoen Optical in Thailand features a gang of nearsighted thieves trying to rob a bank but broke into a sperm bank. You can guess what happened next!

VideoSift: So Bad They’re Good!

VideoSift’s "collectives" are neat, user-created groups of videos on a certain topic. This particular one, called That’s terrible! Who gave that a green light? is all about clips that are sooo bad they’re awesome!

The most uncomfortable moment in gaming is X-Box’s Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, where gamers play a ninja called character Raiden. Who just lost his clothes. And does cartwheels. Naked.

Link [NSFW-ish, I suppose, suggestive cartoon nudity - can't see any of the naugthy bits]

Cackling Arnold Schwarzenegger (before he became the Governator, of course) in a weird Japanese energy drink ad . ‘Nuf said. Did I mention it’s a weird Japanese ad?

Link (here’s another one: Link)

Here’s the trailer for a 1972 blaxsploitation movie called "The Thing With Two Heads" with Rosey Grier and Ray Milland.

The movie is about a dying racist who got his head transplanted … onto the body of a black deathrow inmate!
