This guy seriously shreds it on the guitar, and his heavy metal version of the Dragonborn Theme from the video game Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim serves as great background music while you’re bashing Blood Dragons about the head with a magic mace.

Watch This Japanese Man Jam With A Celery Flute

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Food & Drink, Living, Music, Video Clips on January 12, 2012 at 4:00 pm

(YouTube Link)

If you’re fed up with simply eating celery, then why not take a note from this guy’s playbook and turn it into a musical instrument!

Watch as he sticks a custom made celery flute up his nose, then plays some sweet tunes for your enjoyment, tunes that can only be played via vegetable, or recorder, or any other toy flute ever made.

But hey, he’s obviously after style points with this one, and I’m sure he’ll get invited to lots of dinner parties once everyone sees his amazing talent.

Thankfully, he doesn’t eat his instrument when he’s finished playing. And, if you thought the celery flute was the extent of his power over vegetables, check out his other YouTube videos and be amazed at his homegrown musical skills!

The Great Mistake Lurking in “Don’t Stop Believin’’

Posted by Miss Cellania in Music on January 12, 2012 at 8:02 am

The song by Journey came out thirty years ago, but after its initial hit status, “Don’t Stop Believin’” got more mileage thanks to the TV shows The Sopranos and Glee. After all this time, I just learned a fact that everyone in Detroit knew all along.

For nearly 31 years, this flash of distracting cognitive dissonance has struck each time Steve Perry’s bright tenor lands on the iconic but geographically flawed second line: “just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit.” Because, as anyone with a tie to the Motor City knows, South Detroit doesn’t exist, either as a term of art or a geographical locale.

East Side? Sure. It’s where Eminen spent his adolescence. West?* Home to the original Motown Records. Southwest? Best Mexican food in the state. But South Detroit is as fictional as the Shire of Middle-earth.

Even songwriter Perry did not realize that there was no such place until just a couple of years ago. He finally explains how it ended up in the song. Link -via Metafilter

You Can Finally Rock Out With Skyrim

Posted by Jill Harness in Entertainment, Gaming, Music on January 11, 2012 at 12:34 am

Tired of playing Skyrim on your console and want to instead play mandolin while living out your dreams as the Dragonborn? Then you’d better head over to TT Guitars on Etsy to get your own Skyrim electric mandolin. Of course, if you prefer bass or guitar, you can always try those as well, but somehow mandolin seems more appropriate for Skyrim.

Cover Version Of Daft Punk’s Derezzed Performed On Floppy Drives

Never has an instrument used to play a cover song been more appropriate than this-using five floppy drives, and a bit of software, to cover the Daft Punk hit Derezzed.

It’s a crunchy, minimalist sound that’s sure to make robots of all types bob their heads to the beat, which will probably put most humans on edge. Glowing helmet not included.

Strangers Have A Jam Session On The Subway

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Living, Music, Travel, Video Clips on January 4, 2012 at 11:15 pm

New York is the kind of place where anything can happen at any moment, and although that comes with plenty of bad, this video shows that there are also many instances of spontaneous goodness going down, even on public transit.

These strangers on a train, who both happen to have their instruments with them, break out in a soulful song,  much to the delight of their fellow riders.

Whether this chance meeting was truly by chance or not ceases to be an issue once you watch them play, and feel that energy that seems to be in the air that New Yorkers breathe.

Tipper vs. Music

Posted by Miss Cellania in Bathroom Reader, Music on January 2, 2012 at 5:09 am

The following is an article from the book Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader Plunges into Music.

People around the world have been trying to regulate music for centuries, but in the 1980s, Tipper Gore launched the first campaign to rate albums. Here’s the story of how a vice-president’s wife took on graphic lyrics in music and won …sort of.

DARLING TIPPER

In 1984, Tipper Gore, wife of then-senator Al Gore, bought Prince’s Purple Rain album for her 11-year-old daughter Karenna. They put on the VD and Gore liked it …until she got to “Darling Nikki,” a very sexually explicit song, and one Gore thought was inappropriate for an 11-year-old. Had she known, she never would have bought the album.

Gore did some more “research” on the level of vulgarity in popular music -she watched MTV for a few hours and found more songs that troubled her, including Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher,” and Mötley Crüe’s “Looks That Kill.” “The images frightened my children, they frightened me,” she said. “The graphic sex and the violence were too much for us to handle.”

She started talking to some friends -wives of prominent Washington businessmen and politicians- and decided to use her influence to do something about it. With Susan Baker (wife of Treasury Secretary James Baker) , Pam Howar (wife of powerful realtor Raymond Howar), and Sally Nevius (wife of Washington City Council chairman John Nevius), Gore formed the Parents Music Resource Center, or PMRC, in 1985.

PMRC’s stated goal: to raise parental awareness of “the growing trend in music towards lyrics that are sexually explicit, excessively violent, or glorify the use of drugs and alcohol.” The group even suggested that the increase in some crimes in the previous 30 years directly correlated with the popularity of rock music -rape was up 7% since 1955 and teenage suicide was up 300%.

PMRC TO RIAA: X, V, D/A, O!

Beautiful Skyrim Cover Performed On Violin

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Gaming, Music, Video Clips on December 31, 2011 at 11:49 pm

The soundtrack music for the video game Skyrim is quite beautiful already, but when Jason Yang and his violin play the songs they become a thing of ethereal beauty.

We’ve been seeing a lot of this type of video game and orchestral/classical music crossover (Final Fantasy orchestra, Legend of Zelda orchestra, etc.), and I’m sure that game soundtracks will continue to inspire musicians of all kinds to perform their own interpretations of these songs.

Morrissey Hacked Into Google Earth

It was recently discovered that if you use Google Earth to view the Salford Lads Club in the UK you will find an image of the Mozster hanging out in front of the club, just like in this iconic photo of the Smiths from their The Queen Is Dead LP.

Now that’s what I call a dedicated Morrissey fan! I wonder who will have their image hacked into Google Earth next? My prediction- Elvis at Graceland.

Digitize-With The Captain Power Rap

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Music, Science Fiction, TV, Video Clips on December 30, 2011 at 9:58 pm

Here’s a moldy old slice of cheese for your entertainment, courtesy of the 1987 sci-fi kids TV show Captain Power. Watch as the Narrator explains humanity’s predicament via reggae-styled rap, all while the heroes battle to keep humans from being turned into machines.

This video is the perfect example of why rapping should be left to the professionals, unless of course you need to quickly come up with a theme song in order to rally the troops against an android invasion.

TV sure has come a long way since the 80s, but have rappers learned from Captain Power’s mistakes?

Robot DJs Are Coming, Hide Your Turntables

Watch this programmed robot arm, complete with creepy pink hand, scratch away on some vinyl like a true turntablist. I don’t know whether to feel amazed by the programming, or deflated by how easy this robotic arm makes the rhythmic scratching of records look.

Either way, it can’t compare until the robot arm is switching records, using a crossfader, and syncing songs on the fly. Until then, the DJs of the world are safe from their robotic overlords. And don’t all robots have a tin ear?

Brett Domino Trio Rocks Their Cover Of Earthquake

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Gaming, Music, Video Clips on December 29, 2011 at 10:59 pm

(YouTube Link)

These geektastic electronic musicians play the kind of songs that make you want to click your left mouse button excessively while nerding out online.

They have a style all their own, part electronic, part hip hop, with some nerdcore rapping thrown in. Their songs would make the ultimate soundtrack for nearly every video game ever made, plus you can dance to it!.

Speaking of video games, this time around the trio plays their own version of the song Earthquake by Labrinth using an app game called Grabatron.

It’s catchy, rugged enough to appeal to the hip hop heads that might get an earful, and I would have played their tracks non-stop in my walkman back in the day, as I worked at getting my initials on the high score pages of my fav arcade games. Geeks up, schmucks down!

Tubalr Wants To Change The Way We Watch YouTube Vids

Posted by Zeon Santos in Blogs & Internet, Entertainment, Music, Society & Culture on December 29, 2011 at 10:33 pm

Have you ever wished for a way to filter through all the crap on YouTube and find the music videos you’re craving in a world devoid of music television? (MTV is clearly no longer about the music, thanks guys).

Well, the makers of Tubalr want to help, and their service will make cutting through the nonsense, and getting to those sweet music videos by your favorite bands, a snap. Here’s a bit more about how it works:

Looking past the fact that Tubalr has a downright ridiculous name (is that supposed to be tubular? Tuba Lore? Two-baller? No idea), it’s quite great. You punch in an artist name, then pick either “only” (to play only that artist’s videos) or “similar” (to play videos from similar artists.) It queues up a big playlist, and you can go about your business as the tunes play on. Think Pandora’s concept, mashed up with Youtube’s music video archive.

I wonder if this will become popular enough to make stations like MTV reconsider their reality TV programming in favor of playing  music videos all the time like the good old days. Probably won’t happen while there is still money to be made off the Jersey Shore phenomenon, but a guy can dream can’t he?!

The Geekiest Musical Instrument Ever Made

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Gadgets, Hacks & Mods, Living, Music, Video Clips on December 28, 2011 at 11:45 pm

(YouTube Link)

This epic musical geek creation is called the gAtari-a musical instrument which uses the extremely limited sound capabilities of the Atari 2600 to make the kind of music hardcore gamers will love, and parents will classify as noise.

I don’t fully understand how the device works, but here the creator cTrix attempts to explain how, and why, he came up with it:

The “gAtari” was my excuse to do something a little silly after I discovered that the Atari 2600 was more limiting than I realized! (31 pitches, minimal waveforms and only 2 channels!) I needed an EQ which could take a high voltage and drop it down to line level (Boss bass EQ) plus a way to hold loops between tracks and parts (Boss delay). So rather than have it “DJ” style config, I thought I make something a little more creative.

I hope the gAtari sparks a new trend in club music, doesn’t the sweet sounds coming out of this thing make you wanna get up and shake your rump?
