They Love Sonic

Posted by Miss Cellania in Food & Drink, Music, Video Clips on February 1, 2012 at 9:14 am

(YouTube)

Giorgio Fareira and Tim Bittar serenaded a Sonic waitress with their order. The gap you hear in the communication was most likely when she ran and made all her co-workers gather around and listen. The guys, who make up the band The Interstate Life, say that the Sonic crew got every bit of the order correct. -via reddit

Eggs Baked into Avocados

Posted by John Farrier in Food & Drink, Living on February 1, 2012 at 7:27 am

This clever recipe makes use of the hole left by the pit of an avocado. You’ll probably need to bore the hole a bit with a cookie cutter. Then fry the avocado in a skillet, add the egg, cook for two minutes, and serve.

Not knowing the real lyrics to the song, Carl wrote his own and as a result debased a timeless traditional folk classic.

Warning: listening to this song may raise your cholesterol level. -Thanks, Steve Cloutier!

How Does Your Food Spending Compare to the Rest of the USA?

Posted by Alex in Economics, Food & Drink on January 31, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Find out how your food spending compares to the rest of the United States with this nifty calculator over at Mother Jones:

Most of the data comes from Bundle.com, a startup that tracks US spending trends by studying the credit card transactions of 20 million American households each year. Bundle gets credit card data from Citigroup—one of its major investors—scrubbed of names and other identifying characteristics. We looked at Bundle data from 2009 for the biggest 100 US cities and noticed some fascinating foodie trends. For instance, Austin, Texas, spends almost twice the national average for dining out; five Detroit households could eat for a year on an average Austinite's food budget.

Bioshock Themed Craft Beer

Posted by Zeon Santos in Entertainment, Food & Drink, Gaming, Living, Science Fiction on January 31, 2012 at 1:32 am

This here’s a craft beer for the gamer in your life, the kind of beer enjoyed by those who also enjoy apocalyptic first person shooters, and products named after in-game brands. By dubbing his delicious beer Brow Sweat, craft brewer Calum has made a pale ale worthy of an eternity under the sea, in true Bioshock fashion. Here’s how I imagine the radio spot would sound:

“If you’ve had a long day lurking around Rapture in your grimy party getup, bashing people with a lead pipe and talking to yourself maniacally, you need to sit down and relax with a Brow Sweat Brew from Ryan Industries, a pale ale without all that ADAM from a name you know you have to trust…or else! Pick one up today at your nearest Circus of Values!

Can You Make Pizza In A Jar?

Posted by Jill Harness in Food & Drink, Living on January 30, 2012 at 10:46 pm

By now, you’ve all heard about cupcakes and pies in jars, but can classic pizza pies be made in a jar? The concept is the same, just add your dough and other ingredients and bake. While I love pizza and the cupcakes and pies in a jar sound tasty, something about pizza in a jar just seems soggy.

Pizzagna Combines The Best Of Two Great Things

Posted by Jill Harness in Food & Drink, Living on January 29, 2012 at 11:01 pm

If Garfield were real, this brilliant combination of pizza and lasagna would be enough to give him a heart attack…assuming he didn’t already have one as a result of his terrible diet and lethargic lifestyle. The idea’s pretty simple, just pile some thin crust pizzas into a casserole dish with a little extra sauce and cheese and voila…pizzagna. It would go great with your pizza beer.

Meet Rita Lawlor, a seven-year-old girl from Sarasota, Florida, who recently became the youngest person to receive an award from her local fire department for saving her mom's life:

When seven-year-old Rita Lawlor couldn't wake her mother up, she did what many have probably never thought of doing.

She slapped her with a slice of pizza. [...]

When this didn't work Rita realised her mother may be in serious trouble and rang for help.

Chicken Nugget Diet Not Adequate

Posted by Miss Cellania in Food & Drink, Health on January 26, 2012 at 11:17 am

Is there a picky eater in your family? This story may be useful to back up your warnings to the child who won’t eat anything but chicken nuggets or peanut butter sandwiches or bread. British 17-year-old Stacey Irvine was admitted to a hospital after she collapsed and had trouble breathing. It came to light that she had eaten hardly anything at all besides chicken nuggets since she was two years old.

Miss Irvine, who has never eaten fruit or vegetables, had swollen veins in her tongue and was found to have anaemia.

Medics gave her a series of injections and started her on an urgent course of vitamins.

But, despite being warned that she could die if she sticks to her nugget addiction, she still can’t resist the fast food.

Miss Irvine, who prefers McDonald’s treats but also enjoys KFC’s, told The Sun: ‘I am starting to realise this is really bad for me.’

That understatement is not news to Irvine’s mother, who has been warning her for years that her diet would send her to a hospital. But Irvine had eaten other things -fries, chips, and an occasional piece of toast to go with her nuggets. Link -via Arbroath

Floating Grill for Pool Parties

Making The Jumbaco A Reality

Posted by Jill Harness in Food & Drink, Living on January 25, 2012 at 1:36 am

If you’ve seen the Jack In The Box commercials promoting the imaginary Jumbaco, then you probably already figured that someone would end up trying the item out, even if it isn’t actually on the menu. Sure enough, Serious Eats has gone ahead and tried it so the rest of us wouldn’t have to.

Surprisingly, the review is pretty positive other than the fact that it is so messy:

Cheeseburgers and tacos share a lot of the same core ingredients, so the flavors blended together well (with the exception of the pickle)…The shell added some texture, and the two extra slices of cheese and taco “meat” brought a touch of simulated Mexican flavor to the burger, which is pretty mono-texture and bland on its own. On the downside, you need about one napkin per bite, and under no circumstances should anyone ever look at the slimy meat paste inside the tacos.

Now that you’ve seen someone else eat it, would you try the Jumbaco out?

The Creepiest House Cleaning Reminder Ever

Pizza Steamed Buns Sound Delicious

Posted by Jill Harness in Food & Drink, Living, Travel on January 23, 2012 at 11:10 pm

Chinese steamed buns stuffed with meats or other delicious fillings are always a treat, but Japan might have just upped the ante with their new pizza buns found at the local 7-Elevens.While the reviewer at Serious Eats doesn’t seem to be too fond of the actual product, I think we can all agree that the idea has a lot of great potential.

What do you guys think? Yum or yuck?

Buffalo Wing Cupcakes

The Super Bowl is less than two weeks away. Now I know that most of you probably eat, in accordance with tradition, nothing but cupcakes that day. But hear me out: buffalo chicken wings. I know that it sounds crazy, but try it. Even if it’s as a compromise recipe, like this cupcake by Stef of The Cupcake Project.

Buffalo wings and cupcakes. Like haggis and this tube of expired cookie dough that I found behind Alex’s desk, they just naturally belong together.

The Chemistry of Meringue

Posted by Miss Cellania in Food & Drink, Science & Tech on January 23, 2012 at 10:30 am

Not the dance, that’s merengue, which has plenty of chemistry, too. This concerns that delicious sweet fluff that tops your lemon meringue pie or the lightweight candy sold at bake sales. It’s made by beating egg whites into a foam, which can then be cooked. But getting it right is tricky. It may help to know the scientific reasons it might not turn out they way you expected. Smithsonian’s Food and Think blog tells you all about the meringue that went wrong. Link

Unhealthy Food Spawned By Video Games

(YouTube Link)

We should all thank our lucky stars that video games aren’t considered to be “just for kids” anymore, because we don’t have to deal with an endless slew of inedible junk food products based on video game characters!

Now you’d be more likely to find video game themed alcoholic beverages and energy drinks, which are a far cry from Pac Man Pasta and Donkey Kong Cereal, although I’ll be the first to admit that this gamer marketing angle definitely worked on me as a kid in the 80s.

Burger King’s Planning to Try Out Delivery Services

Posted by Jill Harness in Business, Food & Drink, Living on January 21, 2012 at 12:52 am

Sometimes getting in your car and going down the street is just too much work, but you still have to eat at some point. That’s why Burger King is planning to try out a delivery service in certain U.S. markets. Presumably, if the plan goes well there, the service will expand to the rest of the U.S. Would you order delivery from BK or would you rather just head over to the drive through?

The Wine That Tastes About 4 Billion Years Old

Posted by Zeon Santos in Food & Drink, Living, Science & Tech on January 20, 2012 at 9:43 pm

Meteorito is the wine with the taste of outer space right in the bottle! That’s because it’s made using a 4.5 billion year old meteorite, that was found in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, to help enhance the flavor with the taste of Uranus. Betcha saw that one coming, didn’t ya?

All kidding aside, this wine is the result of astronomer Ian Hutcheon’s quest to bring his two loves-space and wine, together in a way that can be enjoyed by all. But, if you want to taste this meteoric wine for yourself, you’ll have to make the trip down to his observatory in Chile to get your hands on a bottle.
