Now get moving. There’s no time to waste.

Oh, you want details? Fine, fine. From the Show Me State:

The museum is planning a major exhibit on the evolution of women’s underwear and needs the public’s help to round out its collection of old-fashioned and modern unmentionables. The “Underneath It All” exhibit is slated to open July 1.

Curators are understandably picky about what they’ll take, and the museum’s underwear interests tend toward the antique and the exotic — like 19th century corsets and inflatable brassieres. But they also are looking for good examples of more everyday items of more recent vintage — like padded panties, 1980s shoulder pads and a Wonderbra or two.

The goal is to chart the course of American women, industry and consumer culture through the lens of lingerie, said Shannon Meyer, a senior curator who is organizing the exhibit.

Huzzah! Another scientific mystery bites the dust! Scientists have finally
cracked a problem that has "perplexed humanity since Leonardo da
Vinci pondered it 500 years ago."

Learn all about the Rapunzel Number, which provides a key ratio needed
to calculate the effect of gravity on hair relative to its length. In
the right hands, this dangerous number can predict the shape of any ponytail:

Cambridge Professor Raymond Goldstein told Reuters that he and
his colleagues took account of the stiffness of individual hairs, the
effects of gravity and the average waviness of human hair to come up
          with their formula. [...]

"That determines whether the ponytail looks like a fan or
whether it arcs over and becomes nearly vertical at the bottom,"
Goldstein said in a telephone interview.

The research also took into account how a bundle of hair is swelled
by the outward pressure that arises from collisions between the component
          hairs.

Oh, he also mentioned how the Rapunzel Number would also help scientists
deepend their understanding of fibers, as well as be useful in computer
graphics and animation, but we all know that the real reason for the study
is to break the stronghold of the hair stylist mafia on ponytail-wearing
        populace.

By now you’ve discovered that the man in the picture is not Steve Jobs, but rather a mutton chopped Asian man impersonating the tech superstar.

However, that thing standing next to him has to be a cyborg, a real life cybernetic organism, although I’m pretty sure it must be quite underpowered since it’s been constructed out of Mac parts.

In true Macborg fashion it won’t be compatible with 80% of the world, it will be impossible to fix once broken, and don’t even think about upgrading- if you want more memory you’re just going to have to break down and buy a new one every four or five years.

But it sure is shiny, and clean looking, with lots of white and silver bits and a fruit shaped logo, that counts for something, right?

Joe Massie, an award-winning florist, and his team assembled it using roses, chrysanthemums and gerberas:

The gown, designed for the upcoming Valentine’s Day, involves more than 170 hours of labor and reportedly weighs just under two stone.

The gown features petals from 1,000 Naomi red roses all over the dress, fifteen Carmen roses and 200 chrysanthemums, decorated with gold-leaf, around the hip and skirt of the dress, and petals from 150 Purple Power roses, 75 gerberas and 300 carnations, all picked from Walmart’s Valentine’s bouquet collection, to flush this creation.

beautiful blonde? Yes, a model, actually. But not in the traditional sense
you're probably thinking. Meet Andrej Pejic, the world's most famous androgynous
        fashion model:

As Fashion Week gets under way in New York City, Pejic is one of
the most recognizable — and controversial — faces in the
industry. He’s the only top-tier fashion model who can walk down
the runway as either a man or a woman. And his androgynous beauty has
turned him into a trendsetter in an industry that’s always seeking
          to push the envelope.

“He’s just this beautiful thing that everyone wants
a piece of,” says stylist Kyle Anderson, who dressed Pejic for
          a German magazine cover.

He has the kind of face that makes even the vainest woman jealous:
high cheekbones, flawless skin and plump, shapely lips. When he speaks,
his ever-so-slight Adam’s apple is the first sign of his masculinity.

Though Pejic isn’t trying to be a woman, many in the transgender

The iconic weapon wielded by the main character(s) in the Portal video game franchise is about to become a reality thanks to the team at Neca, makers of fine replicas and awesome action figures.

This 1/1 replica looks so good that your fellow cosplayers will be sooooo jealous when they see you sporting this bad boy! And the quite affordable $208 price tag makes it perfectly accessible to all who want to strap this sucker on during playtime.

You can see lots more pretty pictures of this cool life-size replica at the link below. I predict a flood of Portal cosplayers will be in attendance at Comic-Con this year, and every one of them will have one of these strapped to their arm. The world could use a few more Portal costumes, and about a thousand less anime cosplayers!

If your boyfriend has been looking for a little validation lately, a sign that shows you appreciate him and think he’s a good guy, then you might need to get him a Boyfriend Badge this Valentine’s Day. Here’s what creator Ashley J. has to say about them:

My boyfriend is an achievement whore when it comes to gaming, so these buttons are a perfect v-day gift.

The ($8 — or $1.50 apiece) set includes (from top left to bottom right): Drunk Make Outs, You’ve Accepted My Fetish, Breaking the Fart Barrier, My Pet Likes You, Met the Parents, and Moral Support While Puking.

These are one of the most relatable sets of relationship related merch I’ve ever seen, and I should have a set of these from each of my ex-girlfriends, except the one that had a dog that just did not like me very much, and that other one whose parents were dead. I’m still very good, I promise! *wink*

I have dubbed this ultimate gamer geek accessory the Forearm Guard Of (Dice) Rolling, but creator Dia calls it the Dungeons and Dragons Dice Gauntlet. It’s a hand made leather cuff that contains a LilyPad setup inside which automatically rolls a die, from d4 to d20, then presents the result on the screen. And the fun part is-you can make one for yourself, because Dia has included detailed, step-by-step instructions at the link below.

So now, when you roll a natural 20, you can hold your arm aloft and yell like a true Barbarian, for the proof is right there on the screen! Seriously though, hang on to your dice because you don’t want the Dice Gauntlet to crap out on you when you’re about to go heads up with a Beholder.

This hand crafted sword looks waaaaay too big to be lugging around all day during a convention cosplay session. Inspired by the sword carried by the main character Guts in the anime/manga series Berserk (as seen in the poster above the sword), it’s a super sized prop that looks really hard to handle. I applaud your effort sir, now get to work on that Final Fantasy VII Buster Sword stat!

New York Press Conference 1964
Reporter: Where you your haircuts come from?
  George Harrison: Our scalps.

In their early years as a fledgling rock and roll band in the late 1950s and into the early 1960s, The Beatles each sported typical slicked-back, greased-up Tony Curtis/Elvis Presley type D.A. haircuts. In an early explanation as to the origin of the Beatles haircut, George was quoted as saying that he came out of the swimming baths one day, his hair had fallen down over his forehead, and he just left it that way.

The true derivation of the world famous coiffure is a bit more complex. In August of 1960, the newly-0named “Beatles” consisted of five members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, bassist Stu Sutcliffe, and a newly-hired drummer named Pete Best. The band was hired to play as series of gigs in August of 1960 in Hamburg, Germany. It was there that they met two people who were to have a profound effect on their future careers as icon and trendsetters: Astrid Kirchherr and Jürgen Vollmer.

Kirchherr was a very original and creative photographer. One night she saw The Beatles play at a local club in Hamburg called the Top Ten Club (she was talked into going by her boyfriend Klaus Voorman and fellow artist and friend Jürgen Vollmer). Astrid, Klaus, and Jürgen struck up an immediate and close friendship with the five young, talented, and slightly homesick young rock and rollers. Also, Astrid and bassist Stu Sutcliffe almost immediately fell in love.

Using Jean Cocteau’s 1950 film Orpheus as her main inspiration, one day Astrid gave her beloved Stu a new haircut (it was also a style she had seen on many German boys at her college). She washed the grease out of his scalp and combed the locks straight down, over his forehead. Astrid recalled that she originally used the long combed-over cut on her boyfriend Klaus Voorman, to cover up his bog, floppy ears.

Although the exact dates are nebulous, it is indisputable that Stu was the first Beatle to sport the Beatle haircut on stage. When Stu came onstage to perform that night, John and Paul laughed hysterically and ridiculed poor Stu. Stu was soon to leave the band in early 1961 (he died tragically in April of 1962 of a brain hemorrhage at the early age of 21).

George was actually the first of the later famous Beatles to wear the Beatle cut. Astrid recalled (after Stu), “then George came along and asked me to cut his hair that way.” She added that “John and Paul couldn’t decide whether to have the different haircut.” When George came on stage with his hair combed forward in front of an audience at the Top Ten Club “the rockers gave him funny looks” and he combed it back the next day. This was in the early months of 1961.

George Harrison, before and after.

In October of ’61, John and Paul decided to take a spur of the moment vacation to Paris (one of john’s aunts had given him the princely sun of £500 for his 21st birthday). In Paris, they encountered their old friend Jürgen and asked him to give their hair the combed over treatment. According to Paul, “He (Jürgen) had his hair mod style. We said, ‘Would you do our hair like yours? We’re on holiday, what the hell, we’re buying capes and pantaloons, throwing caution to the wind.’ He said ‘No, boys, I like you as rockers. You look great.’ But we begged him enough. So he said alright. We sat down in his hotel and we just got it. The Beatle cut.”

The new Beatle cut was not without its early drawbacks. Their road manager Neil Aspenall recalled, “The boys were an easy target for troublemakers who attended those early dates. Gangs would often make it a point of shouting insults at them. It was their childish way of looking for a fight or getting back at the Beatles because their girls thought so much of them.”

In August of 1962, drummer Ringo Starr was asked to join the band. Drummer Pete Best never joined John, Paul, and George in combing his hair in their new over-the-forehead look. His hair was too curly. When later asked why he never combed his hair into a Beatle cut, he replied, “They never asked me.” This bit of non-conformity, while not the entire reason, was probably one of the contributing factors when when the Beatles decided to give poor Pete the sack after two years of loyal drumming with them.

At the time, Ringo not only had a greasy swept-back haircut, he also sported a stylish beard. Ringo recalled John’s phone call to him, asking him to join the Beatles. “You can keep your sidies (sideburns), but lose the beard,” he was instructed. Early publicity photos, as well as Ringo’s picture on the Beatles’ first album Please Please Me, show Ringo clean-shaven, but still with a slightly swept-back coiffure.

By late 1962, the Beatle haircut was firmly established as an easily-recognizable part of the Beatles joint persona. In the early months of 1963, the band had already gotten used to being referred to as “the four moptops” by the British press. In September of 1963, The Beatles record “She Loves You” was played on Dick Clark’s popular dance show American Bandstand. According to Newsweek, when kids saw a photo of four long-haired kids, they just laughed. The record received a mediocre 73 rating in the “Rate A Record” segment of the show.

When they first came to America in February of 1964, TIME magazine referred to their hair as “mushroom haircuts.” Besides the obvious Beatles wigs, the Fab Four cottage industry also spawned Beatle hairbrushes, Beatle combs, and Beatle hairspray. Their then-controversial haircuts became fodder at every Beatle press conference.

John stated that he hadn’t visited an actual barber in years; George cut his hair when they were on tour and his wife Cynthia cut it when he was home. Ringo’s girlfriend Maureen Cox, a hairdresser by trade, cut his hair (the two married in February of 1965).

On the Beatles tour of Australia in mid-1964, two girls named Grace Ferrigno and Val Bahrens got to cut John, Paul, and Ringo’s hair in Melbourne (George was out at the time on a “scenic mountain drive.”) Later, the girls tried to sell the precious sheared locks of hair outside Festival Hall. They ended up making no sales. No one believed the hair was real.

Interestingly, when asked in an early interview about what his future goals were, Ringo stated, quite sincerely, that his dream was to own a string of hair salons. Although he led an incredibly successful life with huge accomplishments, this was one goal Ringo was never to achieve.

I really grok Michael Williams’ motivation for this project. I have a pair of comfortable leather shoes that I’ve worn almost every day for the past five years. I’ve done both office work and manual labor in them and they’ve held up amazingly well. Williams has had a lifelong love affair with Red Wing 875s, a classic American work boot design now over one hundred years old. When his most recent pair wore out, he sent them back to the factory for restoration. The workers kindly took photographs of every step of the process. You can view them at the link.

The craftsman known as Evil FX has a very ambitious, and geeky, goal when he hits his workshop-to create a full suit costume of Daedric style armor from the Elder Scrolls video game series. Here’s how he made it:

..he is starting out with a pretty cool Daedric sword as a “test build.” The one-handed sword was constructed out of heavily dremeled EVA sheet foam which is apparently perfect “for carrying around all day at conventions and passing all con/customs weapon policies.”

Want to show your future wife that your life together will be full of excitement and adventure? Then give her an Indiana Jones themed engagement ring! Here’s what Redditor Homerliwag decided to do when the time came to propose to his beloved:

It was about 2 or 3 days before November, 11, 2011 (11.11.11). My girlfriend Aimee was wanting to do something special that day. So, I decided to look for an engagement ring. 11.11.11 happened and I had no ring. What should I do?! Being that Aimee is an avid Indiana Jones fan, I decided to surprise her with a ring box. When she opened the box, inside wasn’t an engagement ring – Just a bag of sand! I told her, Indiana Jones must have swooped in and stolen the “treasure” and left her with a bag of sand (just like the movie).

Being a designer and artist, I felt I had to do something special. Since Aimee is a very enthusiastic Indiana Jones fan, the thought of a coiled whip as the ring seemed perfect. I did a few quick drawings and found a custom jeweler in Las Vegas. The “bag of sand” bought me some time to have the ring custom made. And with her favorite color yellow, I selected a fancy yellow diamond which also represents “The Idol”.

Man, Homerliwag has set the bar way too high for the rest of us, and any future wives reading this are going to be sorely disappointed when their significant other merely bends a knee and opens up a ring box. Thanks alot, overachiever!

Rick Smith of the blog Noah's Dad,
noticed something unusual in a Target circular. Like his son Noah, the
model wearing the orange shirt has Down Syndrome.

That's very inclusive and all, but what really got Rick feeling good
is that Target didn't make a big deal about it at all. He
        wrote:

This wasn’t a “Special Clothing For Special People”
catalog. There wasn’t a call out somewhere on the page proudly
proclaiming that “Target’s proud to feature a model with
Down syndrome in this week’s ad!” And they didn’t
even ask him to model a shirt with the phrase, “We Aren’t
All Angels” printed on the front.

In other words, they didn’t make a big deal out of it. I
          like that.

Rick's post went viral and the model, Ryan Langston, got
        quite a bit of attention:

On the Internet, parents of other special needs children are praising
the ads -- and Ryan -- an outpouring that's surprised and overwhelmed
his parents, Amanda and Jim Langston. [...]

"The fact that they are not making a big deal - it's ironic,"
Ryan's father Jim said. "It's a big deal because they are not making
          a big deal about it."

The Langstons' decision to involve Ryan in modeling was never about
the money, Amanda said. "This has just become his own thing,"
she said. And it's also turned into a confidence booster.

You know that old joke that people love to tell you when you’re wearing camo-”Oh, I didn’t see you there, because you were camouflaged!” Well, that joke is about to become a reality, as a North Carolina company has begun creating custom, site specific camo gear. Here’s how it works:

…because the patterns are created from photos that have been taken at different focal lengths it inhibits depth perception — making it more challenging for the brain to see the camouflaged surfaces as a single object.

The camouflage may even receive a further upgrade, with the software firm applying for a patent on an “adaptive” material consisting of a vinyl substrate, a flexible image display that could adjust to the environment, and thermoelectric panels that could modify the soldier’s heat signature.

Now no one is safe, because someone may be blending in with the wall, or sofa, or even your front lawn! Better carry around a sharp stick just in case. On the other side-if you hold still too long you may be exposed to things you can’t unsee, and therapy is very pricey these days, so please use this new camo fabric with care.

This seems like the kind of invention we’ve needed for a long time now-a virtual dressing room that allows you to try on clothes without all that nudity and pointless human interaction.

There are no salespeople to hard sell you into buying that ill fitting garment, you simply try it on for size via touch screen and see what you think for yourself. Here’s how it works:

The ‘Swivel’ system works by using motion-sensing technology of Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect, and a live video feed as ‘mirror images’.

When users stand in front of the system, the webcam would project an image of the user on the connected screen, along with shopping categories, such as clothing, jewelry and handbags.

To try on items, users wave their hands to select categories and items. Items would be digitally overlayed on the live image of the users.

When users turn to their sides, the items would also move along with their bodies.

Swivel takes into account the body types, and would make the items appear as it realistically would. The system also gives users recommendations with their outfits.

Users may also layer items, or change backgrounds to “put the look into context”, and send an image of the final look to friends and family for approval.

The Jetsons had this technology way back in the 1960s, so why has it taken us so long to integrate this technology into our modern shopping routine?

January is filled with weird holidays, from Run Up The Flag Pole and See if Anyone Salutes Day (January 2) to Play God Day (January 9) to Measure Your Feet Day (January 23), but of all the strange holidays this month, perhaps one of the most fun is National Hat Day on the 15th. While there are plenty of fun ways to celebrate this holiday, there’s perhaps no better way for our Neatorama readers to celebrate with a great geek hat like one of these.

Knitted/Crocheted

Unsurprisingly, many of the best geek hats are custom made and, since many nerds also enjoy crafting, the majority of great geek hats you’ll find are knitted or crocheted.

Nerd Domo

As if any crochet Domo hat weren’t nerdy enough, Etsy seller littlepopos opted to make Domo in his excellent nerd incarnation, complete with tape on his glasses.

Skyrim

What better way to play your role as the Dovahkiin than to wear this delightful crochet steel helm based on the in-game icon by Etsy seller CreativeExcess. If you don’t want to fork over the money to get your own completed hat, you can always buy the pattern for $5, which is sort of a real-world version of forging your own helmet.

Pikachu

Pika-Pika-Pika-Hat! Why catch them all when you can get the cutest Pokemon hat from Etsy seller littlepopos?

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Are you a Pastafarian? Then show off your faith with this great Flying Spaghetti Monster beanie by Etsy seller atemptingmorsel.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Sometimes scarfing pizza and fighting crime with sweet marshal arts skills in winter can be way too chilly for the average head to handle. Fortunately, now you can stay warm in the style of your inspiration with these great TMNT caps by Etsy seller charmed come complete with matching masks in your choice of colors.

Cthulhu

Skiing Lovecraft lovers rejoice, you can finally hit the slopes in style thanks to Etsy seller CraftyPA’s Cthulhu ski hat. Lest you worry about being able to consume food or beverage while keeping your head warm in such fashion, don’t worry, there’s a mouth hole under the tentacles.

Fleece

If you don’t like yarn-ridden beanies though, perhaps you’d prefer one of these great geeky fleece hats.

Cthulhu

Yes, the great lord Cthulhu comes in all forms. For those who don’t like ski masks, perhaps a fleece monster on your head will be more comfortable. If that’s the case, head over to Etsy seller GrapeVineFires and grab your own evil headgear.

R2D2

Of course, those who prefer the myths of The Force will find themselves much more comfortable in this great R2D2 beanie by Etsy seller EnchantedCraft. If you buy one though, be prepared to be harassed into beeping all of your conversations every time you wear your new hat.

Angry Birds

Beast of Arrrggghhh

To be fair, this one might not really look like a traditional baseball cap, but under all the eyes and horns great Monty Python plush is a classic, and comfortable, billed hat.

Wild & Weird

Don’t think for a second that geek hats are limited to the standard styles of beanies and baseball caps. Here are a few wonderfully weird options for those of you who really want your hats to make a statement.

Tim the Enchanter

For those who prefer to play as wizards rather than as monsters, this Tim the Enchanter hat should help you along your way, even if it might not be the most effective path of magical learning.

Sorting Hat

While it might not be the weirdest hat on this list, it’s undoubtedly one of the most geeky. After all, only a true nerd will appreciate the true value of an authentic Sorting Hat, particularly one purchased from the always wonderful Neatoshop.

Brain

Whether you’re setting up a trap to attract zombies or you just want to creep out those with an aversion to gore, this delightful brain cap is a great hat for any horror fan. Best of all, it’s the only one on this list that can be made at home using items you likely already have around the house.

Tesla Coil

(Video Link)

If you really want to get weird with your hat though, you could always follow these directions to make your own Tesla Coil hat that happens to play the theme song to Mortal Kombat. Sure it’s incredibly dangerous, but isn’t that half the point?

Do any of you have any great geeky hats? Will you be celebrating National Hat Day this year? Personally, I’ll be wearing one of my many vintage hats, it’s not really geeky, but I almost never wear them, so a holiday is a great excuse to do so.

In today’s fast paced world, sometimes we aren’t walking fast enough to keep up with everyone else, or we simply don’t have to energy to walk but still have places to go.

That’s where the spnKiX come in-they’re motorized shoes which are operated via remote control, and can race along at speeds up to 10 mph. And, all kidding aside, they look like a lot of fun to roll around in, if your bones mend easily and/or you have really good health insurance.

They’re like Heelys 2.0, but the first batch is sorely lacking in many ways-way too expensive (over $600/pr.), battery that can only go about 3 miles before it needs to be recharged for a whopping 3 hours, and a design that can only support up to 180 lbs.

But think of the effect motorized shoes will have on the future-drunks being wheeled home via remote control, dance crews wheeling about the city streets battling until their batteries run out, and roving packs of tweens trying not to get beat up by skateboarders while still looking cooler than rollerbladers.

Back in the good old days of convention cosplay, before the overuse of silicone and foam latex made for fierce competition and bare skin became an acceptable substitute for creativity, people had simpler tastes in costuming, and anime had yet to become the darling of the convention floors.

Now, that’s not to say that these costumes aren’t cool (for the most part, anyway) and well made, but the incredible production quality of modern costumes would date the cosplayers in this gallery, even if the quality of the photographs hadn’t already made it obvious that they’re from long ago.

The photos in this gallery come to you courtesy of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society from the Westercon convention of 1980, and they are full of warmth and charm, cosplay enthusiasts who aren’t used to posing for hundreds of pictures, and only one scantily clad supergal. *gasp*

Sounds Good is a hearing aid that looks like cool high-tech earrings! The hearing aid amplifies sound for the wearer, and tiny “decorative” screens give feedback on the incoming sound. The speaker can see by the color and wave amplitude whether they are speaking too loudly, too softly, or too quickly. The design by Peiqi Tang won the top 2011 Red Dot Design Concept Award. I need to know the minute this is on the market, and we will finally settle the argument of whether my kids mumble or if its all just my hearing loss. Link -via Laughing Squid

The story behind the vest and what it signified can be found at Vintage Space.

Kranz was slightly anxious about his team — not that their youth or inexperience would be a detriment, but that they might feel inadequate. Just because they had been selected last didn’t mean they were the leftovers. To boost morale, Kranz as their leader wanted some insignia for his team to rally around. His wife, Marta, suggested a vest: Kranz loved the three-piece suits that were in style at the time, and she loved to sew. In 1962, she suggested she make him a white vest to wear at his console…

Kranz wore his first white vest on Gemini 4, and it was an immediate hit with his team. He also became lead flight controller during that mission. During the first shift, Kraft turned to Kranz, said “you’re in charge,” and walked out.

But that’s only the beginning. Mrs. Kranz made many vests, in different colors, patterns, and fabrics, each for a different mission occasion. Link -via a comment at Metafilter

How long can you wear the same pair of jeans without washing them? The most common answer you hear is “one semester.” An Australian researcher (and college student) put the question to the test by asking volunteers to wear a pair of jeans five days a week for three months straight.

Melbourne researcher Tullia Jack recruited 30 volunteers to do just that – and will soon exhibit the grimy garments at the National Gallery of Victoria so the public can put them to the pong test.

She hopes the unusual experiment for her Master of Philosophy thesis will challenge our culture of “extreme clean”.

Despite stains and spills ranging from tuna and avocado to motor oil and chocolate, Ms Jack says the expectation dirty denim will be whiffy is much worse than the reality.

“Not washing your jeans isn’t nearly as bad as it sounds,” the Melbourne University student and RMIT fashion lecturer says.

“You really don’t need to wash clothes as often as you think. Stains come and go, they just wear off.”

Thirty people of all ages took part in the experiment. Several of them decided to stop washing their shirts as well. Half the participants ended the three months saying they still didn’t plan to wash the jeans. Link -via Fark

Chilean artist Fabian Ciraolo thought it would be fun to show what 80s cartoon characters looked like when dressed up in fancy retro clothes.
What a fun idea! Neatoramanaut Anton Hecht shot this clever video where
        words are spelled with shoelaces:

This was made with dance students from Newcastle College and filmed
in Central arcade in Newcastle Uk. The writting is a homage to [the
poet Charles Bukowski] about how small things can cause us great harm.
Thanks to Busker Bill who played behind us. The shoelace design was
Mick Davies and Catherin Dufton helped put the moves together.
