Today’s Neatorama and Hobotopia Caption Monkey game comes via National Geographic’s The Daily Dozen (October 2009 – Week 1), the always excellent user-submitted gallery of photographs curated by photo editor Susan Welchman.

This photo was taken by William Lascelles who wrote "My parents live very close to the city airport and every other year they host an air show. This year the Blue Angels were the highlight and were flying over the house during performances. I took my father’s dog outside and made him pose!"

Your task is simple: caption the photograph above. The best/funniest comment will win a Caption Monkey, courtesy of Adam "Ape Lad" Koford. You can enter as many as you’d like below, but please only one caption per comment.

For inspiration, check out Adam’s blog. Good luck!

Update 10/7/09 – Adam has picked the winner! Congratulations to DeepForestGreen who won with this caption: Bernard was less famous that his brother, Clifford the Big Red Dog, but the locals knew that he was the best air traffic controller their town had ever seen.

Caption Monkey 63: Swimming Pigs of the Caribbean

Posted by Alex in Animal, Caption Monkey, Travel & Places on August 25, 2009 at 7:37 am

Photo: Vince Lauro

Pigs may never fly, but they certainly can swim! Vince Lauro won National Geographic Traveler’s Great Outdoors Photo Contest with this awesome photo of the Caribbean swimming pig. From the Intelligent Travel blog:

As the first mate on a 118-foot motor yacht, Vince Lauro has the opportunity to continuously travel across the Caribbean. This photograph was taken near a small key famous for the "swimming pigs." A colony of pigs lives on the key, and they often swim near visiting boats. To capture this clear image Lauro said, "I had to lure this pig into an undisturbed area with its favorite food: fresh watermelon."

LinkThanks Marilyn!

Now, on to the Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey part of the post: funniest caption will win a custom black and white Monkey drawing by our favorite artist, Adam "Ape Lad" Koford.

Caption Monkey 62: Egg-Laying Mountain

Posted by Alex in Caption Monkey, Pictures, Travel & Places on July 7, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Today’s Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey hails all the way from China – it’s about a mountain that’s laying an egg. First the story, via the always amusing Ananova’s Quirkies section:

Officials at Gulu village, Guizhou province, claim a cliff of Gandeng Mountain has laid more than 100 eggs, reports Guizhou Metropolis News.

They claim the eggs, as big as car tyres, appear in ’sockets’ in the cliff around every two years.

Yang Shengjia, director of the local tourism bureau, said: "Another mountain egg is expected to be laid soon.

"If people, like visitors, can have long enough patience, they may view the astonishing scene of the mountain laying an egg."

Funniest caption will win a black and white custom Monkey drawing, courtesty of Adam "Ape Lad" Koford. Contest rules are simple: place your caption in the comment section, one caption per comment, please. You can enter as many funny ones as you’d like.

Be sure to visit Adam’s blog for inspiration. Good luck!

Update 7/8/09 – Adam has picked the winner! Congratulations to CreamTrumpet who won with this caption: Apparently, there’s a baby mountain in here.

Caption Monkey 61: You Shall Not Pass!

Posted by Alex in Animal, Caption Monkey, Movies & SciFi on June 23, 2009 at 7:31 am

Photo: pyza* [Flickr]

This week’s Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey photo of a hamster named Piórko came to us via the always awesome Cute Overload. I think there’s more to this hamster than meets the eye.

As usual, the funniest caption will win a free black and white custom Monkey drawing from Adam "Ape Lad" Koford. Game rules are simple: place your caption in the comment. One caption per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you’d like.

And "You shall not pass" is taken, mmkay? Oh, by the way, that phrase is a variation of a World War I propaganda slogan "They shall not pass" made famous in the Battle of Verdun on the Western Front. J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings, was himself a soldier who fought during World War I.

Be sure to check out Adam’s blog for inspiration. Good luck!

Update 6/23/09 – Adam has picked the winner! Congratulations to JB who won with this caption: I don’t mind the baths, but do you have to BLOW DRY?!?

Caption Monkey 60: Mmm, Dude ... What ARE You Doing?

Posted by Alex in Caption Monkey on June 16, 2009 at 7:57 am

Photo: Vasily Fedosenko/Reuters

Every month, National Geographic publishes a very neat photo gallery called Vision of Earth. This particular one, from the June 2009 selection (third pic, you can see the uncensored version there – warning: clear shot of the behind of a naked, 69-year-old man):

Belarus—Naked on an 18°F day, Valentsin Tolkachev clears an icy canal for swimming. The 69-year-old started the Optimalists—a Minsk-based club with 200-some members—in 1989 to promote hale activities in rural settings.

Your task, after you wash your eyes, is to caption the photo. Funniest one will win a custom black and white Monkey drawing by Adam Koford. Place your caption in the comment section of this post – one caption per comment, please, though you can enter as many funny ones as you can think of. Good luck!

Update 6/19/09 – Adam has picked the winner! Congratulations to jj who won with this caption: The season’s first snow always reminds me of my childhood, of crazy Uncle Hank teaching me to swim like a man.

Photo: Mary Anne Fackelman/The White House – via The Sly Oyster

Hooray! It’s time for the Neatorama and Hobotopia Caption Monkey game.

Yes, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. That’s Nancy Reagan sitting on Mr. T’s lap (Santa T?), giving him a smooch, at a White House Christmas party in 1983. The First Lady actually requested Mr. T come to the party dressed as Santa Claus. This photo was printed in countless newspapers and magazines around the world.

Your job is to come up with the funniest caption for this photo. I pity the fool that couldn’t come up with at least one. Funniest caption will win an original Laugh Out Loud Cat comic by our favorite artist Adam "Ape Lad" Koford.

For inspiration, don’t forget to check out Adam’s blog.

Update 1/7/09 – Adam has picked the winner! Congratulations to jonathan who won with this gem: “I see it in the stars: your career will last forever.”

Caption Monkey 53: Prado Museum

Posted by Alex in Caption Monkey on December 16, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Photo: Geoff Pingree / National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest

W00t! It’s time for Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey game – but first, here’s the story behind the photo, titled "Behold". It’s the Grand Prize winner of National Geographic’s Traveler’s "World in Focus" photo contest, and taken by Geoff Pingree of Oberlin, Ohio (he won a 15-day trip for two to Antarctica aboard the National Geographic Endeavor, which makes our prizes here on Neatorama look downright puny in comparison!):

Pingree, a professor of Cinema Studies and English at Oberlin College, took this photograph at Madrid’s Prado Museum, which was staging theatrical performances inspired by masterworks by Spanish artists. "The photo shows performers playing Spanish King Philip IV and his second wife, Mariana of Austria," he said.

LinkThanks Marilyn!

Now, on to the contest. The funniest caption will win an original Laugh-Out-Loud cat comic by Adam Koford. Place your caption in the comment section. One caption per comment, please, but you can enter as many as you’d like.

Caption Monkey 52: Sara the Walrus Plays the Saxophone

Posted by Alex in Animal, Caption Monkey, Music on December 2, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Photo via Ananova

Hooray! It’s time for Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey game. But first, the story: that’s Sara the Walrus who is trained to play the saxophone!

Under the direction of her trainer, Sara the Walrus grips the brass instrument between her flippers and blasts out a note.

Russian trainer Sergiy has also taught her to strike a nonchalant pose, leaning on a worktop with one flipper under her chin and looking bored.

Sara’s skills at mimicking humans extend to dressing up as a railway platform conductor and blowing a whistle. (Source)

Now, onto the game: funniest caption will win an original Laugh-Out-Loud Cat comic by Adam Koford. Place your caption in the comment section. One caption per comment, please, but you can enter as many as you like.

Don’t forget to check out Adam’s blog for inspiration! Good luck!

PS Yes, Miss C wrote about Sara earlier today, but since I got this post prepped beforehand, let’s just go with it!

Update 12/3/08 – Adam has picked the winner! He really liked the non-sequitur-ishness of this one:

Yum yum yum! It’s time for this week’s Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey game. But first, the story: that’s an uninvited guest that joined Bonnie Marsh for dessert during her Hawaiian vacation. The gecko scampered down the restaurant wall, took a lick, and then ran off! The photograph was voted one of National Geographic Magazine’s Top Shots of 2008.

Now on to the game: your task, should you choose to accept it, is to caption the photo. The funniest caption will win an original Laugh-Out-Loud Cat comic by Adam Koford. One caption per comment, please, but you can enter as many times as you like.

For today’s Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey game, you get to caption this cute photo of Lisa and Robb’s cat Linguine:

Lisa and I have been having a chuckle over the thought that this picture of our dear little Linguine is, unbeknown to us, an internet meme – a fad, which becomes almost inexplicably popular on the web.

This picture was taken about two years ago. I remember at the time, it was a major achievement for me to stand and balance well enough to take a picture while holding a camera in one hand and a bamboo-skewered strawberry in another and convince a cat we like to call "Fidget" to cooperate.

Posted by Alex in Caption Monkey on July 29, 2008 at 7:17 am

Today’s Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey game is special … it comes from my own garden!

A few weeks ago, my wife Tiffany planted a zucchini plant in our backyard … and promptly forgot about it. Today, she discovered something strange about it. It has been very hot in Santa Clarita, California, so a lot of her plants didn’t make it – but this one not only lived … it also grew a humongous zucchini!

Just how big is it? Here’s the Zuc posing with our son 7-month-old son Zach:

… and our 2-year-old daughter Maddy:

So, for today’s Caption Monkey game, we have two prizes: One funny caption (chosen by Adam) will win an original comic by Adam "Ape Lad" Koford from the recent archive fo the Laugh-Out-Loud Cats, and another funny caption (chosen by me) will win a free Neatorama T-shirt.

Contest rules are darn simple: place your caption in the comment section. One caption per comment, please, but you can enter as many funny ones you can think of. Saying that my kids are cute will earn you good will, but won’t necessarily win you the prize, mmkay?

Good luck!

Update 8/6/08 – A little prize confusion here (sorry, only one winner and the prize is the free shirt) – the winner is TripleX, with this caption:

Our plan to destroy all vegetables by peeing in the garden backfired terribly, my young brother…

Well, with the new Batman movie out and all, I thought this cute photo of Baby Batman would be perfect for Neatorama and Hobotopia’s Caption Monkey game!

The funniest caption will win an original comic by Adam "Ape Lad" Koford from the recent archive of the Laugh-Out-Loud Cats. All you have to do is come up with some funny captions: please put your caption in the comment section (one caption per comment, please, but you can submit as many as you can think of). Good luck!

PS Check out this super cool sculpture of Pip of the Laugh-Out-Loud hobo cat!

Update 7/23/08 – Adam has picked the winner! Congratulations to madhen who won with this gem of a caption: “Quick, to the Bat Bjorn !” (Don’t know what that’s all about? Here’s a BabyBjorn)
