Mona Lisa has never looked so delicious! Kristen Cumings recreated Da Vinci's masterpiece in the unlikeliest of medium: Jelly Belly jelly beans.
A few years ago, Jelly Belly officially hired painter and illustrator Kristen Cumings to produce several works of art to add to their collection entitled Jelly Belly Masterpieces of Confectionary Art. The California-based painter takes about 50-60 hours to complete the life-size paintings made of approximately 9,000 to 12,000 jelly beans each. The enormous 4 x 6 feet murals each depict a classic work of art, from Vincent can Gogh's The Starry Night to Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring.
The artist's process involves spray adhesives to initially stick the beans to the canvas and then coating the finished product in acrylic for protection.
My Modern Met has more examples of Kristen's jelly bean art: Link | More at Kristen's website
Last week, we featured a Red Stripe art installation by Filthy Luker's Giant Space Invaders.
Today, let's take a look at this one by Scottish artist Spaceboy 1966, who along with production company Blac Ionica and the students of Edinburgh College of Art, created an animated illustration on the shutters along Newhaven Fishmarket in Edinburgh called the Black Ark Installation (after the legendary Black Ark Studios by Lee "Scratch" Perry).
That seems like a lot of work! Hit play or go to Link [YouTube] - Thanks Matthew!

Ok, so maybe dressing up for Dia de los Muertos for Cinco de Mayo isn’t really what they do in Mexico, but hey, it’s not even really that big of a holiday there either. Regardless, these cool Dia de los Muertos versions of classic sci fi and fantasy characters are certainly entertaining.

Escrif, a street artist based in Valencia, Spain, composed this enormous mural for the Katowice Street Art Festival in Poland. What do you think would happen if we flipped the switch?

Chet Phillips designs wild and amusing playing cards, as you’ve seen here before. His latest collection is “of lively monkey and ape characters exhibiting a vast range of professions and historical simian significance.” You can buy them, too! Link
If
he were alive, Edvard Munch would've screamed. You see, his iconic painting
The Scream (the
pastel version - one of four that Edvard has drawn) has just sold for
a record $120 million at auction to an anonymous buyer.
The other three versions of The Scream are all owned by Norwegian museums, but Sotheby's say the version they sold is the most colourful.
It is also the only one to include a poem by Munch on the frame, which talks of the inspiration behind the series of works.
It reads: "I was walking along a path with two friends - the sun was setting - suddenly the sky turned blood red - I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence - there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city.
"My friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety - and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature."
The bidding lasted only 12 minutes: Link
I know I posted some great Star Wars heels last week, but GailPink posted a link to these in the comments and they were so great that I couldn’t resist sharing them as well. Unfortunately, I can’t find out the original source for these shoes, so if you know where us geek gals can grab a pair for ourselves, please leave a response in the comments.

Carmichel Lynch cleverly adapted plant tags - those markers that tell you how to keep the plant you just bought from your local Home Depot alive for a few days/weeks/months (depending on how green your thumb is) - into playful urban art.

Talented make up artist Jangsara created an entire series of make up styles for The Avengers, one for each character. Personally, I love The Hulk look. If you’d like to learn how to do the looks at home, you’re in luck if you like the Iron Man or Captain America, but they both seem a bit extreme for most women (drag queens would absolutely love them though).

These spooky figures, holding a note with their faces obscured, are part of a strange street art advertising campaign by Red Agency for Goodwill stores, to illustrate that Goodwill is the best place to buy costumes.
The slogan is “Be Anything This Halloween”, but I don’t think I’ll be going to this year’s Halloween bash dressed as a dumpster.
Still, as far as advertising campaigns are concerned, this is a rather creative and surreal campaign, and it would be fun to spot these odd stickers all over town.
Six years ago, Yoshihiro Okada developed a new art form. He takes whole tangerines, scores them with a knife, then peels them in one piece. The peels, like the horse above, look like animals. He can create eighty distinct animal shapes and sells books to show you how to do likewise. Watch a video of Okada at work at the link.

Your favorite Nickelodeon characters get serious as they don the battle gear worn by Earth’s mightiest heroes, The Avengers!
I guess Dennis Culver, the artist behind this wacky animation mashup, is as excited about The Avengers movie as the rest of the interwebs. And his SpongeThor SquareGirdle really put a smile on my face.
Nicktoons pretending to be Marvel superheroes would be awesome to see in an animated form, too bad the legal conflicts between the two entertainment juggernauts would prevent this fun mashup from ever being made. A geek can dream, can’t he?!

One day, Brooklyn-based designer Sebastian Errazuriz, got a brilliant idea of creating a new kind of chair:
[it] came as a quick thought out of the blue. I drew it in the back of a business card and showed it to my wife and friends but they all thought it was dumb. Despite their remarks I was obsessed with the little drawing [...] and continued to carry it around with me in my wallet.
Until one day, he managed to turn his idea into reality. Behold, the Chicken Chair: Link

Theme weddings are all the rage, but it takes a true avant-garde artist to turn your own wedding into a performance art. That's what Gavin Turk and Deborah Curtis did on their wedding:
Six years ago, the couple launched a project called The House Of Fairytales, which featured exhibits based on familiar childhood stories.
One piece on show yesterday was Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother's bed, although Grannie appeared to have been thrown out of it at the expense of two men – one dressed as a sheep and the other wearing a sailor's hat.
Were they warming it up for the newly-weds? "No, just need a kip," groaned the sailor.
There were witches, wolves and toy soldiers and, standing distractedly in the rain beneath a Mikado-style parasol, was Gavin himself, looking – apart from his shaven head – like a junior footman from Downton Abbey. He was not able to say much about the wedding, having a done a Hello!-type deal on the rights, but all his guests were confident it would be a big success.

In 1969, illustrator Ronald Searle’s wife Monica was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her treatment, Searle made a “Mrs. Mole” illustration to cheer her after every chemotherapy session. They were a gift of love, never meant for publication. Monica Searle survived until last summer, and Ronald Searle passed away in December. Now 47 of those illustrations are collected in the book Les Très Riches Heures de Mrs Mole. You can see several more of the cheerful images at Brain Pickings. Link -via Not Exactly Rocket Science
Jason Edmiston confirms what I’ve always suspected-some of the biggest legends in rock and roll history are actually monsters in disguise!
Watch them shred, claw and roar their way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one twisted chord at a time.
I’m surprised Keith Richards isn’t featured among this motley crew, because there has to be monster blood pumping through his veins for him to have lived this long!

The movie adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ seminal science fiction novel A Princess of Mars may have been a commercial failure, but the visual effects, and the concept art behind the visuals, represent the highest level of industry excellence.
Artist Michael Kutsche has kindly shared some of the character and creature designs he created for John Carter with the interwebs, and it should be put together in a book with the rest of the concept art for the movie right away!

There’s s0mething unnerving about the understated horror lurking behind Adam Hosmer’s digital artworks.
Perhaps it’s the way these dark figures blend in with the photograph, or maybe it’s the frayed and unraveling nature of his subjects. Either way, Adam’s works give me the creeps!
Check out more of Adam’s snapshots from the darkside at the links below, but only if you can handle seeing people fall apart right before your eyes.

Hello, Neatoramanauts, look at your action figure. Now back to this. Now back at your action figure, now back at this.
Well, it's about time! Mick Minogue has created the action figure of Isaiah Mustafa, the Old Spice guy, for Gallery 1988's upcoming MEMES show. The "Master of the Ladies" set comes complete with wild horse, man towel, sweater armor, scepter, oyster with 2 tickets to that thing you love, diamond, and, of course, Old Spice Body Wash Formula.

For those refined geeks who just can’t stand how cheap and tawdry modern chemistry sets tend to be, Art. Lebedev Studio has created this gorgeous and classy set modeled after fine China. I don’t know about you guys, but I absolutely love the tiny biohazard icons featured on a few of the pieces.
Absurd Overheard brings Tweets to life with a bit of color, and an illustrated twist on the words being magically Tweeted through the air by the interwebs.
The drawing above is from a Tweet by Matt Saunders (@rabbitportal) via Twitter–”Someone should make a dog chew in the shape of a pipe so when they are carrying it around they look like dapper gents.” I concur, fine sir!
Check out these hilarious illustrations at the link below, they’ll put a smile on your face-which will replace the other expression you had on your face before you looked at them all.

These wire mesh works by Chinese artist Shi Jindian may look like the wireframe view of a 3d object, or some sort of digital art projection, but these fantastically fine sculptures are the real deal, and they’re constructed inch by inch from woven mesh.
Here’s more on the process:
Shi Jindian process involves wrapping the wires around every square inch of the object and then carefully removing or destroying the object, leaving only its wire mesh skeleton
It’s amazing how much detail Shi put into each piece, and the look of each object must change a bit depending on the direction the viewer is facing. Nicely wired indeed!
