The Avengers are such an iconic team of superheroes that it seems fitting for them to be celebrated by working them into an iconic painting.
Argentinian artist Julian Totino Tedesco shows his love for the classics and comic books with his piece The Birth Of Black Widow, which is based on Botticelli’s masterpiece The Birth Of Venus and was used as the alternate cover art for Fantastic Four #17.
Venus is cool and all, but Black Widow has a much higher body count, and a skin tight black suit to match.

Have you ever wondered why cars in horror movies never start the first time the ignition is cranked? Jason Torchinsky solved the mystery when he “was able to find this revealing diagram in the underpants of an unconscious key grip on my lawn.” Read all about it at Jalopnik. Link -via mental_floss

Hey, Pinterest fans! This Twaggie would make a fine t-shirt, as any Twaggie can be made into a t-shirt design. It was illustrated from a Tweet from @arnie. Have you caught up on all this week’s Twaggies? Link
Show Mom your nerdy side by sending her one of these comic book inspired Mother’s Day cards, she might not get the reference but I’m sure she’ll appreciate the gesture!
Some of these cards are a bit maudlin, but considering that a parent’s death is often what spurs a hero into action their darkly comedic tone makes perfect sense.
So, show your mother what a geeky sense of humor you have with these silly superhero cards, but avoid the ones that refer to her as “crappy” or “in Hell” unless she has an amazing sense of humor!
Let’s turn up the heat on crime. Geoffrey Sagers changed a single letter in the team name to create a very different movie.
Shouldn’t Tony Stark be made of cast iron?

Michael is a Scottish artist and blogger who plays Draw Something, the popular game where people guess words from other’s drawings. Only Michael always draws Hitler. Hitler usually has nothing to do with the target word, so the words “ignore Hitler” are also included. He’s done this so much that he has posted his drawings on a blog, appropriately entitled Ignore Hitler. Link -via The Daily What
Admit it Futurama fans, you’ve always wanted Fry & Leela to hook up, but have you ever wondered what the long-term effects of their love would be? These two youngsters seem like a pretty good guess.

This here’s a brand spanking new animated short based on Blizzard’s upcoming video game Diablo III, and it’s directed by Peter Chung (of Aeon Flux fame) and animated by Titmouse (of Metalocalypse and Venture Bros. fame)!!
It’s a bloody, action packed short that left me longing to watch a Diablo animated series. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to settle for some epic gaming sessions when the game is released next week.

Randall Munroe knows how hard it is these days to select your college major. He wrote a little song about it …well, he wrote a comic about it that you can sing to the tune of “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.” There are three verses in total, which you can see at xkcd. Update: Errol actually sang it!
If The Avengers was a stage play in 1887 rather than a movie in 2012, then the Black Widow would still be just as sexy…just in a completely different way. So would Princess Leia, Cat Woman, Wonder Woman and Red Sonia. Depending on where you stand on historical lingerie, you may, or may not, prefer these antique versions (I personally do). Needless to say, some of the pictures are a touch risque although none of them feature nudity or anything too raunchy.

Never Grow Up
Axolotl T-shirt - $14.95
The axolotl "Never Grow Up" T-shirt by Nathan Mazur of Scared of Bees is my new favorite Science T-Shirt from the NeatoShop. Get it? Hah, neoteny has never looked so cute!

Anime girls may look cute in the cartoons, with their big, bright eyes and pinched features, but translating them to real life makes them just plain creepy.
If you see a girl that looks like this coming your way, eyes wide open and mouth agape, you’d better make a break for it because she may be after your soul!
Photographer Chris Scarborough apparently likes the look of the anime ladies, so he’s created an entire series of manipulated photos showing what they might look like in real life. All I can say about this series is AAAAGGGGHHHH!!

Professor Utonium’s mad dream was “to create the perfect little girls.” DeviantART member salvation-series, with his drawing Playing God, reminds us that there’s nothing cute about this children’s cartoon.

If you’re geeky enough to read Neatorama, then you undoubtedly already know that The Avengers comes out Friday and that it’s all slated to be the biggest film of the summer. Of course, depending on your individual geek levels, you could be thrilled to see it or irritated that they ruined yet another great comic franchise by failing to follow the actual plots Marvel has already written. Here’s a look at the comic and how the movie will differ from the original storyline.
In 1960, the Justice League first appeared in DC’s The Brave and the Bold. The line up, featuring Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter, soon became quite a hit. Not to be left in the dust, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby quickly put together their own super-hero team and launched The Avengers in September of 1963. The first line up featured Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, the Wasp and Iron Man.
Similar to the ending of Captain America: The First Avenger, at the end of Captain America’s last story line prior to meeting The Avengers, he is lost in the Atlantic Ocean. In the comic, The Avengers discover his body floating in a block of ice and then revive him in issue #4. He soon joins the team and is given “founding member” status in place of Hulk.
Hawkeye is added to the team in issue #63. While he always intended to be a good guy, he fell victim to a misunderstanding during his first outing as a super hero. After being chased by other heroes, he eventually runs into, and quickly falls in love with, the Black Widow, a spy for the U.S.S.R. Following her lead, he helps her steal technology from Tony Stark. Black Widow is injured during one of their escapades, but before Hawkeye can get her to the hospital, she disappears. After this, he pledges to be nothing but good from then on. Later on, he rescues Edwin Jarvis from a mugger, so Jarvis introduces him to The Avengers to help him clear his name. Iron Man sees that Hawkeye is sincere and sponsors his membership into the group.
Black Widow’s backstory is even more interesting as she is a spy for the Soviet Union who has been repeatedly brainwashed to ensure her loyalty. Despite this, she does try to defect to the U.S. after falling in love with Hawkeye and seeing that he has since joined The Avengers. Unfortunately, she is injured by an agent of the KGB and re-brainwashed. She then goes on to fight against the heroes until she recovers her past identity and then manages to successfully defect and join the team in issue #111, eight years after Hawkeye joined.

Talented make up artist Jangsara created an entire series of make up styles for The Avengers, one for each character. Personally, I love The Hulk look. If you’d like to learn how to do the looks at home, you’re in luck if you like the Iron Man or Captain America, but they both seem a bit extreme for most women (drag queens would absolutely love them though).

Your favorite Nickelodeon characters get serious as they don the battle gear worn by Earth’s mightiest heroes, The Avengers!
I guess Dennis Culver, the artist behind this wacky animation mashup, is as excited about The Avengers movie as the rest of the interwebs. And his SpongeThor SquareGirdle really put a smile on my face.
Nicktoons pretending to be Marvel superheroes would be awesome to see in an animated form, too bad the legal conflicts between the two entertainment juggernauts would prevent this fun mashup from ever being made. A geek can dream, can’t he?!

Referring to Tony Stark as “bright” is an understatement, but this stained glass lampshade, made by DeviantARTist mclanesmemories and shaped like Iron Man’s helmet, is certainly a bright idea in home decor!
The geometric stained glass look is pretty square, representing Tony’s scientific side, while the vibrant colors reveal the billionaire playboy beneath the armor. This is quite possibly the classiest piece of Iron Man themed art work ever made!
