A Different Kind Of NYC Subway Art

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art, Art & Design, Video Clips on May 16, 2012 at 9:52 pm

(YouTube Link)

Artist Ming Liang Lu has a rather unique way of creating portraits for customers that visit him in various subway platforms and tunnels throughout New York City-he cuts up small sheets of paper to look like his subjects, and the results are quite incredible.

The cut paper portraits are so small and delicate it’s hard to imagine that such a clear likeness could be achieved in such a manner, but Ming has obviously been at this for a while (this video was posted in 2010), and his skills with the scissors are most impressive indeed.

Excuse Me Sir, But Your Trash Can Just Doesn’t Fit In

Posted by Jill Harness in Art, Art & Design, Entertainment, Gaming, Home & Garden, Living on May 16, 2012 at 3:01 am

Yes, this is the most epic Mario-themed bathroom ever created. No, I still don’t recommend trying to crawl through any of the pipes in this house to go looking for extra lives and gold coins. All you will find is a terrible smell and tons of bacteria.

Oh, and just joking about the trash can, it just happens to be sitting in a bad part of the room for the theme to work. As it turns out, the rest of the room is decorated with Donkey Kong and Pac Man, you can see more pictures over at the link.

Arcelor Mittal Orbit: The Godzilla of Public Art

Posted by Alex in Art, Travel on May 14, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Photo: Cmglee/Wikipedia

Fans said that it's comparable to the Eiffel Tower, whereas critics billed it as a roller coaster gone bad. Whatever you think, it's safe to say that London's new ArcelorMittal Orbit - which is now the tallest sculpture in Great Britain - sure generates a lot of opinion:

Some critics have called the ruby-red lattice of tubular steel an eyesore. British tabloids have labeled it "the Eye-ful Tower," "the Godzilla of public art" and worse.

But artist Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond, who designed the tower, find it beautiful.

Belmond, who described the looping structure as "a curve in space," said he thought people would be won over by it.

Your Case Mod Wants to Step Out On the Town

I’ve seen my share of case mods, but this one is seriously impressive. Of course, while it looks amazing, it also seems like a huge pain in the butt to actually use on a real basis. I mean, who has room for this thing on their desk?

A Geeky Art Tribute To The Avengers And Maurice Sendak

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art, Art & Design, Book & Literature, Entertainment, Film on May 13, 2012 at 3:37 pm

In the midst of Avengers mania we lost a seminal talent in children’s literature-Maurice Sendak, so DeviantARTist AgarthanGuide decided to pay tribute in a manner most befitting an ubergeek-by turning the Avengers into a parade of Wild Things!

I like that Black Widow is waving a banner that says “Shield!”, and all the detail that went into this piece, but where are the Hulk’s pants?

Paper Tornadoes By Mia Pearlman

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art, Art & Design, Crafts on May 12, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Artist Mia Pearlman creates some unique and interesting installations in the form of swirling paper tornadoes, which look far less dangerous than the real thing yet are far more likely to paper cut you to smithereens.

Capturing the feeling of turbulent motion and the random shapes found in a funnel cloud, Mia’s massive cut paper artworks fill the room with a sense of wonder and probably look really neat when a light breeze sweeps through.

The Birth Of Black Widow

Posted by Zeon Santos in Art, Art & Design, Comics & Cartoons, Entertainment, Film on May 12, 2012 at 5:23 pm

The Avengers are such an iconic team of superheroes that it seems fitting for them to be celebrated by working them into an iconic painting.

Argentinian artist Julian Totino Tedesco shows his love for the classics and comic books with his piece The Birth Of Black Widow, which is based on Botticelli’s masterpiece The Birth Of Venus and was used as the alternate cover art for Fantastic Four #17.

Venus is cool and all, but Black Widow has a much higher body count, and a skin tight black suit to match.

A Rainbow Made Out Of Toy Cars

This vibrant rainbow circle was created by artist David Waller, who rounded up 6,000 toy cars he’s collected since childhood and arranged them into rings of color, reminiscent of an OCD sufferer’s childhood memory.

Hit the jump to see a fun close-up shot that looks like a traffic jam in Toyland, and a contrasting shot of the cars lined up in no particular order of color. *gasp*

Romanians Not Amused at Naked Founding Father Statue

Posted by Alex in Art on May 8, 2012 at 11:00 am

With much ballyhoo, the Mayor of Bucharest unveiled a statue of Emperor Trajan, the forefather of the Romanian people when he fused the Roman empire with the ancient tribes of Dacia.

But the public response was anything but flattering:

"I have never seen anything so grotesque, a wolf with a pitbull's head, a lizard's tail and a tumour on its neck, carried by a guy who is visibly embarrassed by his nudity," said one woman passer-by. [...]

Satirical website Times New Roman (in Romanian) commented that "Bucharest's mayor has just inaugurated the first monument dedicated to Romania's stray dogs".

Other commentators have wondered why "the dog is levitating", and why the animal wears a scarf "while the emperor isn't even wearing any underwear".

R.I.P. Maurice Sendak

Posted by Miss Cellania in Art, Baby & Kids, Book & Literature on May 8, 2012 at 8:36 am

Author Maurice Sendak won a Caldecott Medal in 1964 for the picture book “Where the Wild Things Are.” Most of us grew up with that book and others by Sendak, who is known for adding dark and subversive stories to the mostly sanitary, adult-approved children’s books of the time. Sendak died this morning in Connecticut due to complications of a recent stroke.

Roundly praised, intermittently censored and occasionally eaten, Mr. Sendak’s books were essential ingredients of childhood for the generation born after 1960 or thereabouts, and in turn for their children. He was known in particular for more than a dozen picture books he wrote and illustrated himself, most famously “Where the Wild Things Are,” which was simultaneously genre-breaking and career-making when it was published by Harper & Row in 1963.

Among the other titles he wrote and illustrated, all from Harper & Row, are “In the Night Kitchen” (1970) and “Outside Over There” (1981), which together with “Where the Wild Things Are” form a trilogy; “The Sign on Rosie’s Door” (1960); “Higglety Pigglety Pop!” (1967); and “The Nutshell Library” (1962), a boxed set of four tiny volumes comprising “Alligators All Around,” “Chicken Soup With Rice,” “One Was Johnny” and “Pierre.”

Last year, Sendak released “Bumble-Ardy,” the first book both written and illustrated by Sendak in 30 years. A posthumous book, “My Brother’s Book,” is scheduled for release next February. Sendak was 83. Link -via The Daily What

If Your Favorite Geek Gals Were Created 100 Years Ago

If The Avengers was a stage play in 1887 rather than a movie in 2012, then the Black Widow would still be just as sexy…just in a completely different way. So would Princess Leia, Cat Woman, Wonder Woman and Red Sonia. Depending on where you stand on historical lingerie, you may, or may not, prefer these antique versions (I personally do). Needless to say, some of the pictures are a touch risque although none of them feature nudity or anything too raunchy.
