The People Behind Guitar Hero
Guitar Hero and its sequel Guitar Hero II have sold more than 4 million copies and racked up more than $1 billion in sales in United States alone. One Billion!
ABC World News Webcast interviews Eran Egozy and Alex Rigopulous of Harmonix about the phenomenon that is Guitar Hero (and the company’s new game Rock Band):
The simplest way to explain how you play the game is that there’s music being played in the background and notes are coming out and when they hit the what we call now bar, you strike that note and it sounds like the real music. [...]
We get a lot of people saying "well, you’re just teaching people how to play fake instruments" I think that it’s better that they’re playing fake instruments than say, um, shooting people.

Snow Day Rant Voicemail
When it snowed last week, Lake Braddock Secondary School senior Devraj "Dave" Kori, 17, wondered why they didn’t call a snow day. So he called Dean Tistadt, the Fairfax County public school administrator’s home (it was a listed number) and left a voicemail.
Lo and behold, Tistadt’s wife – pissed at being called at home and at the implication that her hardworking husband wasn’t doing his job – called back to leave her own voicemail!
It was a bad move, though – thanks to the long arm of the web, the student got the upper hand: he posted her voicemail on the web!

How is the Writers Strike Affecting You?
Jim Avila of ABC World News Webcast interviews Dade Hayes of Variety about the on-going writers strike in Hollywood:
So what does this tell viewers at this point about what they are going to see on television from now until possibly next Fall. Are we going to see any of those really good programs that are well written or are we going to be in the wasteland of reality TV?
Dade Hayes: Well, it’s going to be reality heavy. They’ve predicted that since last fall when the strike was really taking shape. Shows like American Gladiator and American Idol are already happening now. The question is how much will they be scraping for reality concept as the Spring wears on. We don’t really know that.
I mean it’s a case where every viewer can cast their vote. If you’re not interested in reality replacing your favorite scripted show, you can simply tune out or go to cable or go to the internet. It’s basically that simple. The question now is whether the ratings on reality will be high enough to keep the engines running at the network.

Let me ask you this:
How Could the New Hampshire Polls Get It So Wrong?
Over the years, polls have gotten very accurate in predicting who will win elections. But obviously, pollsters were wrong – very wrong – in predicting result of the New Hampshire primaries.
Nine individual polls (even Hillary’s own poll) showed that Obama had a significant lead – some even had him with double-digits leads. So how did the pollsters got it so wrong?
There will be a serious, critical look at the final pre-election polls in the Democratic presidential primary in New Hampshire; that is essential. It is simply unprecedented for so many polls to have been so wrong. We need to know why.
But we need to know it through careful, empirically based analysis. There will be a lot of claims about what happened – about respondents who reputedly lied, about alleged difficulties polling in biracial contests. That may be so. It also may be a smokescreen – a convenient foil for pollsters who’d rather fault their respondents than own up to other possibilities – such as their own failings in sampling and likely voter modeling.
Gary Langer, the director of polling at ABC News, explains: Link [ABC World News Webcast, Flash video] | The Numbers, Gary’s blog – Thanks Zach!
Is the United States Economy Heading Into a Recession?
Is the American economy heading toward a recession? ABC World News business correspondent Betsy Stark talks about the disappointing report that the nation only added 18,000 jobs last month.
Bill Blakemore: Betsy, is 18,000 far off the mark of what is considered healthy?
Betsy Stark: Oh, it’s way off the mark of what’s considered healthy. You need about 100,000 jobs to just absorb all the new people who come into the job market every month looking for work. So this really is a bleak number. And the other thing that happened was there was a 3/10th of a percent jump in the unemployment rate to 5%. So put those two things together and it’s really flashing recession.
Housing slump, credit crunch, pricey oil – I’d be surprised if we’re not going into a recession …

The "Singing" Highway in South Korea
Driving down the highway in South Korea can be a musical experience (just enough to get your attention, in case you’re sleepy or not paying attention):
The road is carved into thousands of grooves. When the car tire hits the grooves, the vibrations turn into a sound source. It makes different tunes depending on the size of the grooves … The rhythm is controlled by the lengh of the groove. For example to get one second of the "do" note, the groove is stretched 28 meters.

Amazon Kindle: the iPod for Books?

Amazon is trying to do for books what Apple’s iPod did for music: Amazon Kindle is not the world’s first the electronic book reader, but perhaps it has the right combination of features to make it work (Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, said that the goal of Kindle is to revolutionize "the last bastion of analog" with a device so good you forget that you’re even using a gadget).
Here’s a video clip from ABC World News:
Similar to the iPod, the Kindle is designed so even the most technologically challenged user can create a literary library that is accessible in seconds. … The device costs $400 and holds up to 200 books. Each book costs $10 and so far there are 90,000 titles to choose from Amazon.com’s electronic bookstore.

The History of Mario

Bill Blakemore of ABC World News Webcast has the concise (and neat) history of the most famous video game character of all history: Mario!

Getting a Ride on the U2 Spy Plane

Jonathan Karl did something that very few civilians ever get to do: ride along on the U2 spy plane:
The U2 goes to such a high altitute you you basically have to wear a spacesuit. I’m doing what they call the ‘pre-breathe’ which is basically getting in the suit and breathing pure oxygen before you go up to the flight. The reason why you do that is they want to get all the nitrogen out of your blood because if nitrogen is in your blood when you reach the altitude of 65-70,000 feet, it will actually try to get out and your blood will literally boil.

Want to be a Jedi? Don’t just flail your lightsaber like the (in)famous Star Wars kid … As Yoda would’ve said: "To Star Wars Jedi Academy you must go". As Taryn Fireside, a student at the academy, said:
