If we couldn't manipulate moving pictures, we wouldn't have all the wonderful movies that transport us to fictional worlds through special effects. But there are more and more manipulated videos that pass themselves off as real life, and it's hard to know the difference. Technology always jumps ahead of common knowledge, so it's little wonder that faked videos fool people just the way manipulated photographs have since the 19th century, and fake news on social media passes itself off as real news. The lines between raw videos of real life, advertising, fiction, and the quest for virality have become blurry.
