The 5 Types Of Romantic Comedy Posters

Romantic comedies are (arguably) the most formulaic of all movies, and studios use that rom-com formula to make a bunch of money with very little effort.

Many fans enjoy the predictable nature of rom-coms, and will actually get upset if a film strays too far from the norm, so it's no wonder filmmakers don't even try to do anything different with the genre.

In fact, romantic comedies are kept predictable right down to their poster layouts, of which there are exactly around five types.

There's the Back to Back, the Two Guys One Girl, the Pick-Me-Up, the Men Are Inept and the Well, Here's Everyone!!, five poster types used to advertise the less than five types of romantic comedy plots.

The list is missing one overused type of rom-com poster- the Close-Up of Guy and Girl Making "Funny" Faces, a true classic!

There was an old Sonny & Cher movie ( I think "Good Times") in which it is said there are really only 10 scripts in Hollywood. They just change the names, locations, etc.

Romcoms may be formulaic but they're not all Hollywood sappy stories. One of the best romcoms of the last decade is 500 Days of Summer but it didn't have the normal "happy ending".

Even formulaic romcoms can be different if it's less about fairytale stories and more about "normal" people, especially if it is well-acted. Take Miles Teller (of Whiplash fame). He had two romcoms, The Spectacular Now and Two Night Stand. He makes both romantic movies watchable. Or how about Daniel Radcliffe? He was brilliant in the rather sappy romcom "The F Word".

For every forgettable Katherine Heigl romcom, there's a good one by Zoe Kazan. Don't sell the genre short just yet.

They're neither romantic nor comedic. All of these posters can be summed up as "amazingly-attractive woman thinks she has trouble attracting men". Somebody should make a movie about an average-looking woman.
