Presidents Removed From Their Coins

This is fun. The tiny heads of American presidents have been cut out of their coins (oops, Jefferson lost his phony tail in the process!). The cut coins are the handiwork of a friend of Imgur user pfefferminzetea who says "some kind of precision saw blade" was used to do the dirty work. Though, there's quite a debate on how precisely the presidents' heads were removed going on over at reddit

Before you ask, I checked, cutting coins is not illegal, unless you do it with the intent to defraud.

But, I have a question, am I the only one who remembers when they used to have a cast member in Disney World's Liberty Square making cutout coin jewelry?

"One does not need a laser or water jet to cut metal. "

I did not mean to imply one needed such tools nor expected them to be used in this case, only pointing out they are now an option now in a well equipped shop, and can make rather detailed, precise cuts with a small kerf, far beyond what humans could have done before with not much effort beyond figuring out how to position and hold the work piece.

Jeff, I believe these came from the same coin. As a metalworker, I can say this was likely done with a jeweler's saw, similar to a coping saw in woodworking. You can cut out pierced designs by drilling a small hole in the coin and threading the saw blade through the hole. This is very similar to how a scroll saw is used to make pierced filigree cut outs in wood. I can see the a clear saw mark on the bottom left corner of the dime. You can see where they cut a little too far past the bust.
One does not need a laser or water jet to cut metal. Humans have been cutting metals for 1000s of years before these things were invented.
