Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko Licking Its Eyeball

(Video Link)

The Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko (Uroplatus phantasticus) is an amazing creature. Leaving aside its religious practices (we don't judge here at Neatorama) it's remarkably well-adapted to blend into a pile of leaves. The tail in particular looks just like a slightly rotted leaf.

Ryan M. Bolton of the Art of Conservation presents this high definition, slow motion video showing the gecko licking one of its own eyeballs. Can you do this? Give it a good, hard try and report on the results of your efforts in the comments.

Why do geckos lick their eyeballs? I just had to look it up. From Children's Museum in Indianapolis:

Most geckos can't blink because they don't have eyelids. Like snakes, their eyeballs are covered with spectacles—transparent scales that protect the eyes. To keep them clean, many species use their tongues like windshield wipers.
