New Scrabble Words

The Fifth Edition of The Official SCRABBLE Player’s Dictionary went on sale this week. There are thousands of new words in it that are now legal for Scrabble play, mostly reflecting modern internet slang.

The announcement, marking the Scrabble bible’s first big update in nearly a decade, comes just days before 500 of the world’s most eminent Scrabblers go head-to-head at the national championships in Buffalo, N.Y. on Aug. 9.

The new words won’t be sanctioned for official use in club and tournament play until Dec. 1. But the new dictionaries will be on sale this week, with updated apps available later this month.

Casual players already accepted words like selfie, dubstep, and hashtag, but now they are official. Other new words include frenemy, bromance, and vlog, plus quite a few more that my autocorrect function does not recognize (and it’s only a couple of years old). Time has a glossary of some of the new words available for Scrabble players.
