Boris Artzybasheff was born in Russia in 1899, and became a well-known magazine and advertising illustrator after he immigrated to the U.S. He was particularly known for anthropomorphizing machines, meaning he made them look like people. Artzybasheff gave personality to factories, vehicles, appliances, computers, and imaginary machines, and occasionally trees or even psychological concepts.
