Texas Chainsaw Artist

There’s no chainsaw massacre here, only a display of artistic skill. Doug Moreland, a country music performer and chainsaw artist, made this sculpture for Gabriel Trinidad of Austin. Mr. Trinidad is a fan of the Texas Longhorns, a minor college football team. This symbol, known as “Hook ‘em [Long]horns,” is a traditional celebratory gesture used by fans on the rare occasions when the Longhorns score a touchdown.

Over the course of 3 days, Mr. Moreland carved the 7-foot sculpture from a dead tree. He attracted an ongoing audience during construction and many more Austin residents are stopping by now that it’s finished.

Mr. Gabriel plans to add to the sculpture LEDs that he can control from his phone. Then, when (and if) the Longhorns win a game, he can light them up.

The symbol is also probably more well known as the "devils horns" popularized by Ronnie James Dio, which is actually what I thought it was before reading the text.
