Photographer Showcases Texas Chrysanthemum Corsage Tradition

They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and although this expression is generally used as a crude euphemism what it really means is that Texans like their stuff large and showy. They like big cars, big hats, big bulls, big belt buckles, and really, really big chrysanthemum homecoming corsages.

These over the top corsages are the focus of photographer Nancy Newberry’s series called Mum, a series that shows guys and gals from the Lone Star State sporting their ridiculously elaborate homecoming chrysanthemum corsages, which are decorated with flowers, ribbons, charms and trinkets to create the signature multi-layered look.

We do crazy mums like this in New Mexico as well. Heh, I even have a cousin who makes them. It's never occurred to me that it might not be done elsewhere!
