East Meets West: A Graphic Designer Describes the Differences between China and Germany

The role of the leader.

Yang Liu is a graphic designer. She was born and raised in China, but she has lived in Germany since 1990. The culture there is different from that of her origins. To explain how, she created a series of posters called Ost trifft West – that’s “East Meets West.” You can view them all here.

In an interview with NotCot, Ms. Liu describes the positive responses that she’s encountered by both Germans and Chinese:

The Chinese response was very positive. I was a little worried about the reactions - I’m sure there are people who like [the project] more or less - but after five exhibitions since May this year (two in Berlin, two in Beijing, and 1 in Nanjing), 99% of the reactions has turned out very positive. The German side is the same; I was surprised how much both sides were interested in this work. […]

A few visitors [to the exhibitions] have told me that they understand more about their current relationship to certain persons in their life better through my book, which makes me really happy!

Neatoramanauts who have traveled to Germany or China: do these graphics strike you as accurate?

How to express an opinion.

What does it mean to be 'on time'?

What a party looks like as seen from above.

being german, i can tell that we do NOT stand in nice rows like that (well, depends... postoffice: yes, busstop: no), our punctuality-window is open 5 minutes to the right, and capture memories: cellphone-cam. maybe the last one is just a bit outdated on both sides. the rest seems pretty darn acurate.
