Photos of Vintage Libraries

(Photo: Bernard Hoffman/Life)

Do you love old libraries? The feel of catalog cards flipping on your fingertips and the smell of old paper-- and the stars are still there, Bones.

The capabilities that computer technology has given to libraries are important and liberating. But there’s an experience to old libraries that is unique. There are still a lot of them around, though fewer every year.

At the tumblr blog Vintage Libraries, you can see photos of the libraries of yesteryear. See this young lady at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.? This photo was taken in 1941. She’s holding a book made of human skin. It used to be that most publishers bound their books in the skins of their enemies.

Now such practices are frowned upon. New generations always throw off the values of their elders.
