I finally saw one episode of the show while on vacation (we don't have HBO at home). Strangely, I could follow what was happening and even explain it to my husband. Not the overarching plot, but what we needed to know about the characters we were watching that one time -just from what I read about it on the internet.

Or, you can just tell them that it's awesomely violent and filled with sex and that they should start from the beginning using HBO Go...that's pretty much my whole GOT spiel and it tends to work.
