Life-size Dollhouse Burned

Saskatchewan artist Heather Benning spent 18 months furnishing an abandoned farmhouse as a life-size dollhouse. For six years, people peered into the glass-from house on the side o fate road in Winnepeg. And now it is gone -burned to the ground by Benning herself.

When The Dollhouse was completed in 2007, Ms. Benning told the CBC she planned to keep it on display until it was no longer safe. The house was already visibly sagging at the time, and after six more Manitoba winters, liability concerns finally prompted the artist to take the torch to it on March 21.

“Part of the foundation of the house had begun to sink/cave in… It was only a matter of time until significant damage would occur,” she wrote.

Ms. Benning spent a week documenting the project before setting it ablaze, and is preparing an exhibition titled “The Death of the Dollhouse.”
