Sushi Layer Cake

A sushi roll? That's not enough. Margeaux went even further by arranging salmon, cucumber and avacado in a layer cake. Just add some candles for a hip birthday party. At the link, you can read her recipe in French and English.

Probably a 9" springform pan, so around $40. I could easily snack on a quarter of this dish by myself. Not likely to endear me to my hostess. It would be another of those events where it would be a good idea to eat before you go.

Tartares may include all the food proteins, but generally describe red meats chopped fine, mixed with seasonings, and served raw. A wedge of the above dish is unseasoned until you add a bit of soy sauce or ponzu.

I took a class at Uwajimaya's in Seattle years ago, that included making this dish. It's stacked up in a springform pan and it's basically just the same ingredients you might use to make a sushi roll, made to look elegant for serving in a more formal setting. Less a finger food, more plate and fork.
