Tinkle Cards for School

Castle Vale Performing Arts College is a public high school in Birmingham, England. This year, students will be issued a "tinkle card" once a week to use as a bathroom pass. They have to surrender the card when used, and unused cards are collected on Friday and re-issued on Monday.

Pupils were also allegedly told their bags would be searched to ensure their mobile phones are switched off and that they have the required number of pens and pencils.

But the change which has outraged parents the most is issuing every pupil with a “tinkle card”. It states: “I am missing a super important learning opportunity because I need a tinkle.”

Another card given to pupils explains how they will have to “track” the teacher rather than talk to them, through a series of hand gestures which have specific meanings.

The new rules were announced after parents protested outside the school after children were sent home for breaching a new uniform dress code. Parents are again furious about the new rules. Link -via Arbroath

I can remember several schools and teachers that did silly things like that regarding bathroom passes to try and discourage kids from leaving class. One teacher made her bathroom pass out of a genuine full size toilet seat. But in reality, it didn't make a lot of difference. The kids that were going to ask to be excused needlessly and meander around in the hall still did and not any more or less so than in classes where the bathroom policy was less theatrical.
If a kid needs to be excused, they should simply excuse them. If a kid is being excused more than is ordinary, it should be addressed with just that student. Maybe there's a health issue. Maybe there's a time management issue. Maybe they're just wanting to skip out for a minute. The teacher is missing a "super important opportunity" to be a responsible adult.

looks like it's a case of "sit down, shut up, and do what we say" rather than engaging the kids in a dialogue and earning their respect. teachers aren't doing enough to get respect these days, and they wonder why the kids aren't learning.

I went to a high school where the teachers went by their first names and if you had to go you got up and went. If you didn't didn't return to class when you should you were just reminded that you were wasting your time not theirs. You could graduate early if you had the motivation.
It was the best school because it taught people how to be responsible and that if you worked hard you COULD do great things and go far! I think that more teachers should be encouraging independence and being self sufficient.
