Does Firefly Take Place In The Same Universe As Prometheus?

Geek overlord Joss Whedon has made no attempt to hide his nerdy side from the entertainment world, and he loves to place easter eggs in his productions that make fans drool at their discovery.

This particular easter egg comes from the pilot episode of Firefly:
In the opening sequence of Firefly‘s pilot episode, “Serenity,” Nathan Fillion’s Malcolm Reynolds is fighting the Battle of Serenity Valley. And losing. But before he’s forced to lay down his guns, he hops behind a giant anti-aircraft cannon to shoot down an Alliance fighter. And when he powers up the gun, the heads-up-display reveals a very familiar logo in the top part of the screen

The logo in question is the Weyland-Yutani Corporation logo, from the Aliens film franchise. Now that would be one amazing crossover-the crew of the Serenity vs. a horde of bloodthirsty xenomorphs!

also in Angel(also by Whedon) in Season 5, the evil law firm Wolfram & Hart claims to have legal ties with Weyland-Yutani in an off hand comment made by one of the employees.

thecoffeeguru - that wasn't because they exist in the same universe, that was because the SFX company that did Firefly also did BSG. It was just a shout-out.

Think about it: BSG is in the far, far past, well before humanity existed on Earth, yet there would be a Firefly-class starship back on one of the original 12 colonies? That one design of starship stayed in our collective unconscious through millenia, only to be used as a low-rent transport ship?

The evidence that Firefly exists in the same universe as the xenomorphs is far more compelling than the one CGI shout-out on BSG. Especially since this could mean the people who left Earth-that-was might have jumped the gun a little, and those left behind maybe fixed things enough to keep Earth livable. Maybe Weyland-Yutani was the company who fixed Earth the most, which is why they have so much control over things. Gah, too much to get into in an article comment - maybe I'll write an essay.

Actually, Firefly takes place in the same universe as the rebooted Battlestar Galactica. BSG takes place int he distant past, ending up with *spoilers* humans arriving on our earth. Firefly takes place int he distant future after we have left "earth that was" and settled into the system shown on the show.

1) Neither show has aliens

2) Neither has warp drive. The FTL in BSG is point to point and was lost when the colonist settled on earth, flying the ships into the sun.

and most important...

3) In the BSG premier miniseries, when Roslin is in the doctors office, wee can see a Firefly class ship taking off through the window behind her.

Well, the Prometheus does have pivoting engine pods, kind of like the Firefly-class. Maybe the reason why the Earthlings of the Firefly universe had to leave Earth-That-Was was fleeing Alien infestation...
