Behind the Scenes on the Original Alien Set

Ridley Scott's prequel Prometheus comes out next month, so prepare yourself by revisiting the original Alien movies. Or maybe just the first couple of them. Go look at a collection of photographs taken on the set of the first film -and you'll get to see the actor who is inside this Alien Queen costume. Link

That's not the Alien Queen. There was no Alien Queen in the first movie. That's just the Alien, with a alternate head that wasn't used in the final cut because Ridley(?) thought an eyeless head would be more frightening and, well, alien-looking. Good call there.

I think the final design used was the best choice. It seems much more unearthly, just looking at his cranium with no obvious eyes.

Skulls are too common in our culture and invoke different feelings to various audiences. The hybrid child in Alien Reserection came off as silly.
