As far as I know, they’ve always been a thing. I had some taken in 1979. It’s for the newspaper announcement -at least back when people used newspapers for such things.

I think engagement pictures are something wedding photographers are pushing as a chance to get to know the couple before the wedding, take good pictures of them and form a working relationship…

I have a copy of my Great Grandmother’s engagement photo and she was married back in 1893. So I would agree that they have always been the thing, and as Miss Cellania noted, it is traditional to post the announcement and photo in the papers.

I was married in 1994 and we had an engagement photo done. It was sent out with the invitations. It was common practice in our community and surrounding areas for as long as I can remember. My Mom’s fridge always had a couple wedding invitations and their accompanying photos stuck to it.
