This is what happens when the person who actually saw something is not the same person who has the art supplies to illustrate it. "Culture" isn't a recent phenomenon. Out-of-context, dated facts will always look weird. anyone can make a joke after medieval anatomy or renaissance chemistry.
These uncultered lists are getting more and more common... But its always cool to find more of these images.

With the exception of pilgrimages people didn't travel very far, so you could tell them any old tall tale. I'm sure the drawings are accurate to the descriptions. It's the descriptions that are, shall we say, embellished?
