How Is This Possible?

No part of this block was broken off and then reattached. So how did Steve Ramsey drive a nail through the middle of it? Leave your guess in the comments, and then watch the video at the link to see him do it.

If I where to guess, I would think he boiled one end then bent it, nailed the nail, then bent it back in place after boiling it again. (putting wood in hot water makes it rather soft.)

Or its not real and the nail is cut in 3 parts then glued into place.

I think it's an optical illusion - the nail enters at the rear, and then is hammered diagonally towards the front. After, maybe needed to bend the head of the nail a little bit to make it "work" for the picture.

Looks like an optical illusion. But if it looked like an optical illusion, it wouldn't be an optcial illusion, would it?

I just hurt myself.

I thought this would be an optical illusion of some sort & I was really surprised with how it was done. I'd love to try it myself, but I'd probably loose a finger or two just cutting the slots in the wood.

Just out of interest... does anyone know whether you can do it with any type of wood, or is it only a specific type?

drive the nail into a tree and then let the tree grow for x amount of time until the nail is absorbed into it. then cut the piece of wood with the nail in it out and shape your sculpture.
