What Is It? game 190

Here it is, time for our collaboration with the always amusing What Is It? Blog. Tell us what this thing is, if you know. If you don't, make a wild guess!

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you'd like. Post no URLs or weblinks, as doing so will forfeit your entry. Two winners: the first correct guess and the funniest (albeit ultimately wrong) guess will win T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

For more clues, check out the What Is It? Blog. Have fun and good luck!

Update: the picture indeed shows us the inside of a Red Box DVD vending machine. The What Is It? Blog posted the video this picture was taken from. Marty McGuire knew the answer right off, but didn't select a t-shirt. The funniest answer came from Muno, who said this is one of the droids we were looking for! He wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop.

Inside of a Redbox ... dang, someone beat me to it.

OK, so I'll attempt the "funny" route:

It's the inside of an early "digital" jukebox powered by 3.5" floppy disks. Each disk contains one song.

It's a picture of "The Matrix". Turns out us humans only exist as little disks. Neo is being taken out on the right side. I wonder if he will be able to free us all with no arms or legs or any form of I/O device.

Exhibit A - Cray Supercomputer vs. Redbox.

The Cray Supercomputer company has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Redbox. The claim filed with the District Attorney in Seattle, Washington claims that the design of the Redbox kiosk violates various patents related to the design of the early Cray systems. Executives from Cray were unavailable for comment, but inside sources say that Daryl McBride was seen in the building over the last few weeks. Redbox executives were available for comment, but could not be understood over the fits of laughter when asked about the lawsuit.

NATO Weapons Research Images Leaked

Taking queues from American forces strategies for psychological warfare by playing loud music, NATO has developed a prototype CD changes to allow for much faster response to changes to 'conditions on the ground'. A spokesman is quoted as saying "Being able to quickly switch between Lady Gaga and Stryper may be more effective than Lady Gaga alone."

Rejected Ipod Prototypes

Before the name Ipod was used and before Steve Jobs was asked back to Apple, the Apple Research team experimented with several 'personal music exerience machines' This early prototype was rejected, not for it's size or bulkiness, but because the Apple Logo 'could not be applied in a way that met corporate guidelines'

What Marty, et al said. Redbox. Too easy.

Or, it could be Skynet achieving self awareness . . . figuring that earth is not worth taking over from the humans, so it will watch some movies instead.

From Redbox no less, its less than aware country cousin.
