Paused Paintings

Andy Denzler, an artist based in Zurich, has composed a series of paintings that look like screen shots from paused VHS recordings. It's an expression of his rejection of the "hegemony and the aesthetic of the jpeg..." http://www.andydenzler.com/html/paintings-01.html -via Flavorwire

I spoke with an artist who used this effect. It was about 20 years ago. He said that it was simple and artistically unimportant. He would crudely paint a scene that was to be on a television and then blur it with a fan brush.

I disagreed now as well as then. As an element in a painting, I find it to be inspired. As a premise for a show, however, it is pathetic.

The image of the stag in Andy's paintings are a hommage to master of this style, Gerhard Richter. It was something special in the 60's. Now reverse blurring would be something truly innovative!
