What Is It? game 188

It is once again time for our collaboration with the always amusing What Is It? Blog! Do you know what this object is?

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you'd like. Post no URLs or weblinks, as doing so will forfeit your entry. Two winners: the first correct guess and the funniest (albeit ultimately wrong) guess will each win a T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

Check out the What Is It? Blog for more clues, and more mystery items. Good luck!

Update: The thing in the picture this week is a portable hand pump fog horn for use on a boat. Berhard guessed it correctly in the very first comment. Then iago guessed it to be the ultimate size pepper grinder for an Italian restaurant! That was good enough to win the funniest answer prize. Both win t-shirts from the Neatoshop!

More precisely i would guess it is a pump for cheking the Drain-waste-vent system
of sever systems, especcially for checking if it is possible to siphon or blow water out of the „traps“ of the system.

It's a flying fire hydrant. The thing at the top is a propeller.
If there's a fire on an airplane, you can fly one of these up.

I think this is a zombie repellent sound generator. Vaguely remember reading about these. I think they worked by simulating the sound of a right wing christian humming, thereby giving the impression that there were no tasty brains to be had.

I checked on the back of the device and it was owned by Austin Powers as his personal pump and was manufactored in Sweden. It has only been used once.

It is a sunlight pump. In the military its used for for Alaskan duty assignments, (air Force) and in the navy for Washington DC assignments. Prisons have used them in the past, but this practice has dissapeared except in Arizona, where they reverse the feed to supply shade. There are multiple business applications, but they no longer use real sunlight.

During the Victorian Era, physical contact between men and women was pretty much illegal. This device was invented to allow a husband to "motorboat" his wife without breaking the rules

Ever notice that at Italian restaurants the pepper grinders that the waiters carry are starting to get bigger and bigger. Well, this is now the ulitmate size of pepper grinder now available for those pesky italian waiters. It can turn any salad into an inedible sodden mass of ground black pepper almost instantly.

It is the original "green lantern" prototype.. before it was miniaturized to fit in a ring... and painted in green.. the handle was used to charge the lantern with solid green engergy...

Spartan Baby Juicer.

The weakest new borns in Sparta weren't just thrown to the wolves, they were juiced. Much like the game Bioshock. Just with bronze stuff, and dead babies.

It took some time but now i think i know the detailed construction of the device ... it is a horn or a "hoot" device. I think there is a inner cylinder with the diameter of the black cap (the one with the four holes)... the handle operates a piston with a checkvalve inside the inner cylinder..
the space between the inner and outer cylinder represents a resonance space (that may be provided with a helical wall) a pressurized air operated sound generating device is located at the bottom of space between the inner and outer cylinder...

the nozzle serves to emit the sound ...

the device is operated by pusching the handle down...

unfortunately i have no idea for what purpose the sound is used as fog horn, or ohter horn ...

It's an automatic (well, a wind-up powered) roasting spit. Put the meat on the inside, crank the handle and suspend over the fire or just beside the grate. You then don't have to hand turn the meat and it cooks evenly.

It's a manual train horn, used to drown out the pesky passengers when they complained about the delay, or the bumpy ride, or the baby crying at the front of the car, or *WHOOO WHOO*

It is a night signaling device. The handle is to open and shut the shutter, the flange is so only the intended recipients can see the light, the holes in the top are so the candle or other flame device can still burn inside. Typically these were used between military ships at night during wartime.

OR, it could be the very first Play-Doh squeezer. Poor kids had to crank that thing for 15 minutes to get a decent doh line out. Life was so much harder back then.

It's a device for sucking the air out of a room when a shocking announcement has been made. That's how the origin of the phrase came about. ;-)

This was an old special effects gadget from vaudeville days. Yuu put dry ice in it and pump it to fill the stage with "smoke". It was called a "pot smoker".
Most theaters found it cheaper to just let jazz musicians hang around back stage.

It is a lantern of sorts. A container of water is kept at the top, and allows water to drip down, at a chosen rate using the handle, onto Calcium Carbide, thus creating acetylene for light.
