Got PMS? Take a Look at These Milk Ads!

California Milk Processor Board along with their ad agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners (probably all men) have launched a new "Got Milk?" ad campaign touting the benefits of the white stuff in reducing the symptoms of (gasp!) PMS.

The campaign comes complete with a Flash-heavy microsite called Everything I Do Is Wrong and these print posters:

So, ladies, are those great ads for milk or the greatest ever?

Via Adweek and Andrew Sullivan's The Dish

You're right. They're "probably all men." Men are such bastards. Hopefully all the female scientists can do something about that whole 50%-of-the-population thing.

From your mega offensive description of your OCD cutting board to this offensive ad campaign being endorsed by you. Has Neatorama always been like this? I've been reading Neatorama for years and I've never been this upset with a website I have read for this long in such a short period of time. Congratulations, you just lost a longtime reader. Fuck you.

Of all the things I don't like about these ads, it's that they are incorrect! Doctors like Christine Northrup say that if PMS symptoms are aggravated, to try cutting out dairy which may be the culprit. It's like recommending Metallica for a migraine.

oh come now, it's kind of funny...ad agencies make most of their money by making men look like stupid oafs therefore if you don't see the humor in this you must be PMS-ing.

Does Neatorama get paid for this or what?

Anyways, being a woman myself, I don't actually understand this PMS hysteria. I am sure many women have PMS problems, but surely it's not so bad that men need to cower in fear and offer to become toe-rags?

Honestly, I find these ads stupid. Not offensive, just stupid. But then again, advertisement agencies are known for spurting out copious amounts of crap on a daily basis, so...

I agree with Shono. I don't find the ad offensive at all, just plain lame and stupid. Not funny.
Seriously, anyone that gets offended by that needs to take that stick out of their butt.
Just roll your eyes at the unfunny ad and move along.

"So, ladies, are those great ads for milk or the greatest ever?"

Eh, the writer of the article basically sounds like they're trying to start a comments argument or create a controversy where none exists. Nothing I hate more than making a big deal out of nothing. God forbid anyone make a mediocre joke about anything.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
They knew this would create controversy. This discussion right here - it's what they want. What's the worst that could happen? I don't see too many people boycotting milk just because of this.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Not exactly offended but I do believe they are in extremely poor taste and judgment as they would inevitably upset the more feminist among us.

and also I'm with shono about the pms hysteria. My boyfriend of 3 years can't even tell when I am pms-ing much less cowers in front of me (that's not to say I don't feel the effects though). I'm sure there is the occasional woman that gets hit hard, or who is just generally a b***h that such a situation is a reality but I hardly think it should apply to the female population as a whole.

Wow - just went to the website - here is a tip from the "Sensitivity Vocabulator" there:
"Instead of IRRATIONAL, try PASSIONATE."

My whole life, I never understood what people were talking about re:PMS until now all of a sudden at age 46, and it is not pretty - I sprout fangs! That is so abnormal for me, though, that I am able to be aware that my reactions are out of proportion and exercise restraint.

So, I am torn - I see the humor and I initially smiled, but I do find the targeting offensive. Women are not consistently hysterical irrational out-of-control creatures who are here to make men suffer and kowtow on a monthly schedule.

I'm female and think this is hilarious. And that's *after* spending a few days in bed from horrific cramps once a month. The expressions on the poor men's faces are understandable--PMS can be terribly painful and make anyone cranky. But I think it's both funny and sweet how obviously the men in the ads want to make things better.

lots of people are taking this way too seriously, making fools of themselves, and lending credence to the ad campaigns notion that women are spiteful and conceited creatures to whom men should have to cater and apologize.

i find it all hilarious.

Can't understand ppl like @Lyuba getting so mad at this, the thing is more stupid than anything else.

It's not like one of those 50's ads about spanking your wife for not buying Chase-Sanborn Coffee.

.
hrm... -Now that I think of it, it's funny; my wife is ALWAYS buying the wrong coffee; like deliberately...

This is meant to be immaturely funny. It is. Made me smile, but obviously not to be taken seriously The odd part is comments in this thread... some people actually are fitting the stereotype portraid. I honestly don't know if some comments are being satirical or if they're serious in their negativity. If serious... don't laugh at baseball in the nuts videos.

Have any of you watched TV lately? Every add that requires someone to do something stupid to sell a product does it at the expense of men. Need a woman to look smart about choosing a product? Show a man using a broken, stupid version. Need someone goofy and dumb to contrast with someone strong and confident? You can bet the man is the dumb one.

Advertising makes men look terrible. I thought fighting sexism was about equality, not swinging the door all the way the other direction? Women are not sacred, they are not special. They are humans, as are men. Since many (I assume female) ad executives enjoy making men look like pathetic cavemen, I think it's only logical to take the high ground and not make dumb PMS jokes.

Men: don't sell your product at the expense of women
Women: don't sell your product at the expense of men

The only commercial that makes me actually feel good about the male gender are Dos Equis commercials. And that is a sad state of affairs. This may shock you, but men have feelings. We like being liked too. I want to feel just as good about myself when I watch TV or read a newspaper as a woman, and adds like this are counterproductive.

BUT AS LONG AS WE SELL MORE MILK AMIRIGHT

Also:

Saying "well, ad agencies make men look dumb, so its okay if we do it!" is insane.

The better sentence would be "well, ad agencies make men look dumb, so I won't be a vengeful petty idiot and retaliate by turning the add around to insult the other half"

@lyuba: I think I'll do the same. Neatorama is not for me anymore. I've been a long time reader too, but I can find the same neat content on other sites without all the thoughtless bullshitt.

Bye bye Neatorama...
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
Neatorama, you used to be all about great content. Now you:

1) Put up this blatantly sexist BS as if it's hilarious
2) Spam me nonstop with posts advertising all the crap you sell
3) Make TONS of factual errors in posts and, when an error is pointed out NUMEROUS times in comments, still don't fix it 99% of the time.

This website's turned into the blog equivalent of AOL. I'm done.

Funny how this silly ad - because it's pretty darn silly - is getting so many people worked up.

I loved the reactions. Thanks, guys.

Sometimes, ads are pretty stupid. Think about the people who conceive of them. I wish I could mess up like this at my job, and keep my job.
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
i am a woman. this is funny. i think the women who find these ads offensive relate to the ads too personally and they dont like to look inward. its not rational to be offended by these ads- they are super funny! Ok, so you do this to your boyfriend and dont like being, in a sense, called out on it? the PMS woman is not a rational woman...
Abusive comment hidden. (Show it anyway.)
As a woman, I'm not offended by these ads and to be perfectly honest, I don't see/understand how they can be offensive to anyone. I don't find them particularly funny either, but they really don't affect me. I drink milk and will continue to do so as I please.
On a side-note, I dislike a lot of women because they are irrational and over-emotional. They don't think. Being offended is a choice and if someone chooses to be offended by this, that proves irrationality even more.
