Map of the U.S. According to Number of Residents Per Waffle House

You know you've always wondered. Alas, we have no Waffle Houses in Iowa - it would appear that our allotment went mostly to Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia, where there are fewer than 200,000 residents per Waffle House. Artist Cat and Girl is selling an 11x14" print of this enlightening map for $12 if you find it's a must-have for your house (kitchen art, maybe?).

Waffle House is part of the southern landscape. What would the south be like without them? While the rest of the country has a Starbucks on every corner, the south has a Waffle House on every corner. I used to eat there all the time when I was in college. Part of the appeal is that they stay open 24 hours, so people go there in the wee hours of the morning after a night of drinking with friends. Gauldar couldn't be more correct when he described it as a 1970's grungy coffee and cigarettes type of place. There are several in my hometown, within walking distance of one another. Someone has shot themselves in each one on several occasions. They also get robbed and Kid Rock got in a brawl in one once. Classy establishment, that Waffle House. Needless to say, I don't eat there anymore. Yuck.

I'm sure the opportunity to opening a location is there, but the question is if there is demand to have one. They have that 1970s grungy coffee & cigarettes atmosphere that doesn’t seem to attract people anymore for some reason.

Why is it surprising that there are more Waffle Houses in the South considering it started in Atlanta?

If you want one in Iowa, franchise opportunities are no doubt available.

Do you really think the food at a Tim Horton's, for instance, is more nutritious? WH isn't haute cuisine, it's a 24/7/365 grill. And I'll have my hash browns scattered and covered, please.
