Men Don't Just Think About Sex. They Think About Sex, Food, and Sleep

I'm sure you've heard of the old urban legend that guys think about sex every seven seconds. What a load of sexist poppycock! Guys don't only think of sex. They only think of sex, food, and sleep:

The median number of thoughts about sex by college-age men was 18 times a day to women's 10 times a day, the study found. But the men also thought about food and sleep proportionately more.

"In other words, there was nothing special about sexual thoughts," study researcher Terri Fisher, a psychologist at The Ohio State University, Mansfield, told LiveScience. "Males thought more about any of the health-related thoughts compared to females, not just thoughts about sex."

I've read this story before. But I remember the title being "And now for something REALLY f'n obvious."

Men are programed to pro-create. How is this not sinking in?!

If those college age guys got enough sleep, they wouldn't have to think about it.

Professor: Wake up! What time did you go to bed last night?

Sleepy student: Ten. But I had to get up at midnight and go back to my room.

That is somewhat cultural and based in a biased sample. There is this philosophical tradition which basically suggests that sexual desire is egotistical and therefor essentially false. Once the illusion of sexual desire is seen through, the desire doesn't arise or when it does, it isn't given any power, it is seen to be a delusion given immense power by the culture.

As long as they don't define what constitutes a "thought" and how people are supposed to record them, I'm afraid this kind of study doesn't mean anything.

Really?

Seems hard to believe. With all due respect.

I mean, even if I accept that I only want to pleasure myself (if that is true), I still want to pleasure myself.

Agreed. And don't tell me that being asked to record when you think of sex is not going to influence things. As far as I'm concerned this "study" is worthless. But anything with the word "sex" in it will get published EVERYWHERE. (Maybe that corroborates the findings, oops. But not really: if I read the newspaper and there's a headline with the word sex in it: I will at least check it out, I admit. But that does not mean I'm thinking of sex all day long, which imho is just absurd, except maybe for "sex maniacs".)

Doesn't it seem that there's something wrong with this study? They thought about sex only eighteen times?? That's basically only once an hour. Am I some kind of bizarre freak? Anyway, I'm not very impressed.

Somehow I think the Hawthorne effect may confound any study that asks participants to record whenever they think of a specific thought.

Don't think of a polar bear!
