The First TV Remote Control

We take TV remote control for granted, but did you know that the first TV with remote control was made 50 years ago? Here's an ad for RCA Victor's wireless wizard remote control (billed as the greatest advance in television since color television itself / the ultimate in performance and convenience).

The first remote I ever saw in person had a wire connecting it to the tv. Yes, they already had wireless remotes, but they were to expensive for the average family.

I was still impressed with the wired remote, since it did let you stay in your seat.

I wonder how they worked? Do you think this one was electronic?

I have one from somewhere that is mechanical - each button strikes a different length of metal tube and makes a different tone. I had a friend who could change the channels on their tv with the clicking from a ratchet.

Neat!
