One-Legged Wrestler is a National Champion

Anthony Robles of Arizona State University was born with only one leg, but that didn't stop him from becoming the national champion in his weight class last night:

Born with one leg, Robles took the 125-pound title Saturday night with a 7-1 win over defending champion Matt McDonough of Iowa. Robles' three-day performance here earned him the Outstanding Wrestler award.[...]

He took control in the first period, jumping out to a 7-0 lead with a two-point takedown and two turns that exposed McDonough's shoulders to the mat for five more points. Robles uses his gripping power on those turns.

"My tilting is due because I have such a strong grip, and that's because of my crutches," he said.

A 125 lbs wrestler who is missing one leg has the rest of the body of a 150 pounder. Almost insurmountable advantage in wrestling. On the other hand, how does his opponent not get a 2 point takedown every match?

What Ed said. Being able to convert that leg weight into upper body strength is a big advantage. And when a wrestler shoots a leg against a one legger, guess which leg? Knowing the opponents strategy is a nice advantage too. One legged wrestlers isn't that uncommon. Next up: amputations for champions. Scholarships await.

I understand the extra pounds in upper-body strength would be an advantage, but lets get real now......how can a wrestler work from a one-peg base? and, how could he possible defend against a quick takedown shooter? or, without benefit of 'spread,' how does he defend against being rolled? Obviously, it can be done--as this young man shows us....but, I am in total awe -- just shy of disbelief! NCAA Athlete of the Year in my book..at least.
