Revolver Fires 28 Gauge Shotgun Shells

Brazilian armsmaker Taurus caused a stir when it released "The Judge" -- a revolver that fires shotguns shells in addition to handgun cartridges. The Judge shoots .410 gauge shells as well as .45 Long Colt cartridges. "The Raging Judge", pictured above, goes even further in this approach, firing the much larger 28 gauge shell.

Yes, the Judge looked down on as a defensive weapon. Too heavy and bulky for most people to effectively conceal, the large jump from the .45 Colt case to the barrel compromises effectiveness, and the stubby, rifled barrel destroy any semblance of usefulness with a shotshell.

According to the linked article, this is officially a short-barreled shotgun (SBS) according to the ATF. With a short enough, smoothbore barrel, it could get by as an AOW, changing the $200 tax stamp (aka "scary gun transfer fee") to a $5 stamp, much like Serbu Super Shorty. Either way, I doubt it would be allowed for importation as it lacks a "sporting purpose" as determined by anti-gun bureaucrats, and I don't see Taurus open a manufacturing facility in the US just for this, uh, thing.

Guys, your SUPPOSED to shoot .410 SLUGS through it, not shot shells, or .410 buck shot.
.410 slugs do very nice job of stopping things, like muggers!
Its a close in defense weapon, you dont carry it for regular shooting, its back up.
I know an undercover cop who carries one, it works ,,very well,, in his opinion. Says a gang banger or stoner attacking him doesnt have a chance,,,makes big hols in very bad criminals.

The original .410 Judge is basically useless, as a .410 won't do much more than irritate most people. It's only use is killing small birds and snakes.

As for this gun, the ATF has determined it to be a short-barrelled shotgun and not a pistol, so it's not going to be sold.

If I recall correctly, The Judge was originally designed for the purpose of stopping a car jacker. I remember watching a promotional video for it on the Taurus website demonstrating it's use. Just point it out the open window of your car and squeeze off a 410 shot. That being said, I don't think this new "Raging Judge" is going to be useful as anything more than a novelty item used to impress and accidentally shoot your idiot friends at drinking parties.

Only good explanation I've heard for a Judge is for snake defense. If you need to react quickly to deal with a snake in the grass, a spray of pellets (probably get a decent pattern at 6 feet too) would be vastly superior to a pistol slug. That said, i doubt a 28 gauge would be that much better than a plain .410

I own one of the original Judge models with a 2 1/2 inch barrel and it's a fun gun to shoot. It's surprisingly accurate at self-defense distances using .45 cal. long Colt rounds but not very effective with standard 410 shotgun shells. The spread with #4 shot was about three feet at a distance of ten feet. A heavy coat might stop the pellets. HOWEVER, I substituted Federal's self-defense shells with 000 buckshot designed for the Judge and it became an entirely different animal. At the same distance, one shot tore three large holes with a spread of less than four inches in a standard military silhouette target. Not perfect but it'll do the job. I do agree though, the 28 gauge is more lkely to be a novelty than a practical weapon.
